Investment Strategy

The Fund’s objective is total return with an emphasis on current income but also considering capital appreciation, measured in U.S. dollars. The Fund invests primarily (at least 70%) in U.S. government securities, including mortgage-backed securities. The Fund may also invest in other debt instruments. The Fund invests substantially all of its assets in investment grade debt instruments. The Fund may invest a relatively large percentage of its assets in a small number of issuers. In purchasing or selling mortgage-backed securities, the Fund may do so directly or through to-be-announced (TBA) transactions. The Investment Manager may consider environmental, social and governance (ESG) factors in its fundamental investment analysis alongside other factors.

He is a member of the MFS Fixed Income Strategy Group. Peter joined MFS in 1992 and became a portfolio manager in 1993. Previously, he was Vice President in the Fixed Income Department at The First Boston Corp. from 1986 to 1992. Prior to that, he served as a corporate financial analyst. Peter earned a bachelor's degree in finance from New York University. He is a member of the Lehman Brothers Index Advisory Council. All portfolio managers at MFS are supported by an investment staff of over 160 professionals utilizing MFS Original Research®, a global, company-oriented, bottom-up process of selecting securities.
