Investing.com – Canada stocks were lower after the close on Friday, as losses in the Mining, Consumer Staples and Real Estate sectors led shares lower.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite declined 0.62%.
The best performers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Pretium Resources Inc. (TO:PVG), which rose 5.65% or 0.39 points to trade at 7.29 at the close. Meanwhile, Bonterra Energy Corp (TO:BNE) added 4.01% or 1.33 points to end at 34.52 and Canadian Energy Services&Technology (TO:CEU) was up 3.42% or 0.24 points to 7.25 in late trade.
The worst performers of the session were Canexus Corporation (TO:CUS), which fell 5.73% or 0.09 points to trade at 1.48 at the close. Capstone Mining Corp. (TO:CS) declined 5.47% or 0.070 points to end at 1.210 and Teck Resources Ltd (TO:TCKb) was down 4.11% or 0.62 points to 14.47.
Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the Toronto Stock Exchange by 733 to 716 and 182 ended unchanged.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 4.93% to 13.83.
Gold for August delivery was up 0.14% or 1.70 to $1190.50 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in July rose 4.52% or 2.60 to hit $60.28 a barrel, while the July Brent oil contract rose 4.73% or 2.96 to trade at $65.54 a barrel.
CAD/USD was down 0.06% to 0.8038, while CAD/EUR fell 0.44% to 0.7316.
The US Dollar Index was down 0.16% at 96.97.
