Investing.com – Canada stocks were higher after the close on Thursday, as gains in the Energy, Utilities and Financials sectors led shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite gained 1.73%.
The best performers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Bonavista Energy Corp (TO:BNP), which rose 25.17% or 0.36 points to trade at 1.79 at the close. Meanwhile, MEG Energy Corp (TO:MEG) added 18.28% or 0.89 points to end at 5.76 and Encana Corporation (TO:ECA) was up 14.31% or 0.77 points to 6.15 in late trade.
The worst performers of the session were Celestica Inc. (TO:CLS), which fell 15.73% or 2.18 points to trade at 11.68 at the close. ProMetic Life Sciences Inc. (TO:PLI) declined 12.36% or 0.33 points to end at 2.34 and Bombardier Inc (TO:BBDb) was down 10.10% or 0.10 points to 0.89.
Rising stocks outnumbered declining ones on the Toronto Stock Exchange by 809 to 545 and 190 ended unchanged.
Shares in Celestica Inc. (TO:CLS) fell to 52-week lows; falling 15.73% or 2.18 to 11.68. Shares in Bombardier Inc (TO:BBDb) fell to 5-year lows; losing 10.10% or 0.10 to 0.89.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 3.72% to 23.55.
Gold for February delivery was down 0.13% or 1.50 to $1114.30 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in March rose 4.54% or 1.47 to hit $33.77 a barrel, while the April Brent oil contract rose 4.23% or 1.44 to trade at $35.37 a barrel.
CAD/USD was up 0.38% to 0.7121, while CAD/EUR fell 0.11% to 0.6507.
The US Dollar Index was down 0.40% at 98.64.
