Investing.com – Canada stocks were higher after the close on Wednesday, as gains in the Mining, Energy and Materials sectors led shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite rose 0.72% to hit a new 6-months high.
The best performers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Birchcliff Energy Ltd . (TO:BIR), which rose 7.61% or 0.41 points to trade at 5.80 at the close. Meanwhile, Interfor Corp (TO:IFP) added 6.77% or 0.83 points to end at 13.09 and West Fraser Timber Co. Ltd . (TO:WFT) was up 5.70% or 2.32 points to 43.04 in late trade.
The worst performers of the session were New Gold Inc . (TO:NGD), which fell 4.43% or 0.23 points to trade at 4.96 at the close. Progressive Waste Solutions Ltd. (TO:BIN) declined 4.27% or 1.89 points to end at 42.41 and Gibson Energy Inc . (TO:GEI) was down 3.06% or 0.49 points to 15.54.
Rising stocks outnumbered declining ones on the Toronto Stock Exchange by 741 to 422 and 149 ended unchanged.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 5.45% to 13.36.
Gold for June delivery was down 0.39% or 4.80 to $1224.40 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in July rose 2.24% or 1.09 to hit $49.71 a barrel, while the July Brent oil contract rose 2.67% or 1.30 to trade at $49.91 a barrel.
CAD/USD was up 0.79% to 0.7680, while CAD/EUR rose 0.70% to 0.6886.
The US Dollar Index was down 0.21% at 95.39.
