Investing.com – Canada stocks were higher after the close on Wednesday, as gains in the Healthcare, Consumer Staples and IT sectors led shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite gained 0.47%.
The best performers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Bonavista Energy Corp (TO:BNP), which rose 11.78% or 0.41 points to trade at 3.89 at the close. Meanwhile, Penn West Petroleum Ltd. (TO:PWT) added 7.14% or 0.06 points to end at 0.90 and Chartwell Retirement Residences (TO:CSH_u) was up 6.84% or 0.79 points to 12.34 in late trade.
The worst performers of the session were Avigilon Corp (TO:AVO), which fell 11.64% or 1.63 points to trade at 12.37 at the close. Trilogy Energy Corp (TO:TET) declined 7.58% or 0.35 points to end at 4.27 and Bankers Petroleum Ltd . (TO:BNK) was down 7.24% or 0.160 points to 2.050.
Rising stocks outnumbered declining ones on the Toronto Stock Exchange by 680 to 627 and 185 ended unchanged.
Shares in Avigilon Corp (TO:AVO) fell to 52-week lows; down 11.64% or 1.63 to 12.37.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 8.42% to 25.02.
Gold for December delivery was down 0.54% or 6.10 to $1133.70 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in October rose 1.94% or 0.88 to hit $46.29 a barrel, while the October Brent oil contract rose 2.18% or 1.08 to trade at $50.64 a barrel.
CAD/USD was down 0.17% to 0.7531, while CAD/EUR rose 0.57% to 0.6703.
The US Dollar Index was up 0.50% at 95.87.
