Investing.com – Canada stocks were higher after the close on Wednesday, as gains in the Utilities, Clean Technology and IT sectors led shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite added 1.75%.
The best performers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Surge Energy Inc . (TO:SGY), which rose 13.27% or 0.280 points to trade at 2.390 at the close. Meanwhile, Secure Energy Services Inc . (TO:SES) added 11.00% or 0.90 points to end at 9.08 and Ensign Energy Services Inc . (TO:ESI) was up 8.17% or 0.73 points to 9.66 in late trade.
The worst performers of the session were IAMGold Corporation (TO:IMG), which fell 10.70% or 0.23 points to trade at 1.92 at the close. First Quantum Minerals Ltd . (TO:FM) declined 8.37% or 0.55 points to end at 6.02 and B2Gold Corp . (TO:BTO) was down 7.69% or 0.120 points to 1.440.
Rising stocks outnumbered declining ones on the Toronto Stock Exchange by 714 to 611 and 189 ended unchanged.
Shares in First Quantum Minerals Ltd. (TO:FM) fell to 5-year lows; falling 8.37% or 0.55 to 6.02.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 18.50% to 26.04.
Gold for December delivery was down 1.36% or 15.50 to $1122.80 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in October fell 1.13% or 0.45 to hit $38.87 a barrel, while the October Brent oil contract rose 0.94% or 0.41 to trade at $43.62 a barrel.
CAD/USD was up 0.05% to 0.7501, while CAD/EUR rose 1.78% to 0.6625.
The US Dollar Index was up 1.47% at 95.30.
