Investing.com – Canada stocks were higher after the close on Wednesday, as gains in the Materials, Energy and Utilities sectors led shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite rose 0.60% to hit a new 52-week high.
The best performers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were MEG Energy Corp (TO:MEG), which rose 7.61% or 0.44 points to trade at 6.22 at the close. Meanwhile, Baytex Energy Corp (TO:BTE) added 7.55% or 0.41 points to end at 5.84 and Bonterra Energy Corp (TO:BNE) was up 7.05% or 1.80 points to 27.34 in late trade.
The worst performers of the session were Lundin Mining Corporation (TO:LUN), which fell 3.93% or 0.210 points to trade at 5.130 at the close. Nevsun Resources Ltd . (TO:NSU) declined 3.01% or 0.120 points to end at 3.870 and Amaya Inc (TO:AYA) was down 2.52% or 0.47 points to 18.18.
Rising stocks outnumbered declining ones on the Toronto Stock Exchange by 761 to 378 and 145 ended unchanged.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 3.58% to 13.47.
Gold for December delivery was up 0.52% or 6.60 to $1269.50 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in November rose 2.25% or 1.13 to hit $51.42 a barrel, while the December Brent oil contract rose 1.68% or 0.87 to trade at $52.55 a barrel.
CAD/USD was down 0.10% to 0.7620, while CAD/EUR fell 0.01% to 0.6945.
The US Dollar Index was up 0.03% at 97.91.
