Investing.com – Canada stocks were higher after the close on Thursday, as gains in the Energy, Consumer Discretionary and IT sectors led shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite added 0.41%.
The best performers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Birchcliff Energy Ltd . (TO:BIR), which rose 7.72% or 0.57 points to trade at 7.95 at the close. Meanwhile, Encana Corporation (TO:ECA) added 6.50% or 1.01 points to end at 16.54 and Uni-Select Inc. (TO:UNS) was up 6.00% or 1.83 points to 32.33 in late trade.
The worst performers of the session were Just Energy Group Inc . (TO:JE), which fell 5.67% or 0.45 points to trade at 7.49 at the close. Mullen Group Ltd . (TO:MTL) declined 5.27% or 0.95 points to end at 17.08 and Home Capital Group Inc . (TO:HCG) was down 5.17% or 1.57 points to 28.80.
Rising stocks outnumbered declining ones on the Toronto Stock Exchange by 685 to 480 and 136 ended unchanged.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 10.79% to 12.53.
Gold Futures for April delivery was down 0.59% or 7.35 to $1232.15 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in March rose 1.45% or 0.76 to hit $53.10 a barrel, while the April Brent oil contract rose 1.05% or 0.58 to trade at $55.70 a barrel.
CAD/USD was up 0.03% to 0.7610, while CAD/EUR rose 0.39% to 0.7139.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.48% at 100.62.
