It operates through two segments, Industry Group and Science Group. Its products are used primarily in laboratories for product development and increase yields by enabling 3D metrology, defect analysis, and root cause failure analysis in the semiconductor integrated circuit manufacturing and related industries, such as manufacturers of data storage equipment and other technologies, as well as oil and gas industries. The company’s solutions enable scientific discovery and advancement for researchers and help manufacturers develop, analyze, and produce advanced products, as well as its products are used in root cause failure analysis and quality control applications. Its product’s imaging allows structural biologists to create 3D reconstructions of biological structures, such as proteins and viruses, as well as its products are used by drug researchers and in particle analysis, and a range of pathology and quality control applications. The company also provides support for products and customers for the life cycle of a tool from installation through the warranty period. It markets and sells its products through independent agents, distributors, and representatives in the United States, Canada, Europe, the Asia-Pacific region, and internationally. FEI Company was formerly known as Philips Electron Optics B.V and changed its name to FEI Company in February 1997. The company was founded in 1971 and is based in Hillsboro, Oregon. As of September 19, 2016, FEI Company operates as a subsidiary of Thermo Fisher Scientific Falcon Senior Holdings Inc.
