Investing.com – Canada stocks were lower after the close on Thursday, as losses in the Materials, Utilities and Telecoms sectors led shares lower.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite fell 0.01% to hit a new 52-week low.
The best performers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Crescent Point Energy Corp . (TO:CPG), which rose 17.19% or 0.99 points to trade at 6.75 at the close. Meanwhile, New Gold Inc (TO:NGD) added 15.56% or 0.140 points to end at 1.040 and Shopify Inc (TO:SHOP) was up 12.13% or 19.350 points to 178.820 in late trade.
The worst performers of the session were Goldcorp Inc. (TO:G), which fell 18.40% or 2.50 points to trade at 11.09 at the close. Celestica Inc. (TO:CLS) declined 11.00% or 1.59 points to end at 12.87 and Detour Gold Corporation (TO:DGC) was down 9.18% or 0.99 points to 9.79.
Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the Toronto Stock Exchange by 566 to 539 and 125 ended unchanged.
Shares in Goldcorp Inc. (TO:G) fell to 5-year lows; losing 18.40% or 2.50 to 11.09.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 4.96% to 19.54.
Gold Futures for December delivery was up 0.50% or 6.20 to $1234.00 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in December rose 0.22% or 0.15 to hit $66.97 a barrel, while the December Brent oil contract rose 0.59% or 0.45 to trade at $76.62 a barrel.
CAD/USD was down 0.14% to 0.7648, while CAD/EUR rose 0.06% to 0.6727.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.22% at 96.39.
