Revistacafeicultura- The 2024 coffee harvest is marked by a significant challenge: the drop in grain yield. Due to the strong water deficit throughout 2023, there was a substantial decrease in the filling of coffee beans, resulting in a significant reduction in grain yield. Producers from different regions have reported this drop, with very low coffee sieves and a high level of mocha beans, in some cases reaching 22% mocha. For example, at Rodo Munho Farm, in Rio Paranaíba, MG, a reduction of up to 29% in grain yield was observed. In 2023, 50 grams of coffee contained 298 beans, while in 2024, 415 beans are needed for the same quantity.

The beauty of current situation is in its simplicity: 1) a lot of origins have been affected with the same heat waves/high temps problem; 2) the fact(s) was recorded/confirmed by the stations - no guessing is needed; 3) effect is well studied and described by many researchers; 4) Brazil is KING, if it will be officially confirmed that KING suffered, what to say about other origins ? 5) ES Conilon got harvested for 50% and the problem started materializing - at 50% of the harvest is impossible to expect that remaining 50% will level reduction, the question is only in the percentage, 10% would be very conservative estimate for ES.

ES Conilon on average suffered the same issue as A in MG/SP. But full recognition is needed :) :) :) for both... Sooner or later they will have to stop counting :) :) :).

Well, Procafe admitted problem in full in its last podcast with a lot of details and scientific explanation. So, what is bad for Brazil should be bad as well for other origins, that have got affected in similar way (it's easier to say which one hasn't ...) :)

In some cases, higher temperatures can induce flowering and result in an increased number of settings (future beans). This is particularly true if the higher temperatures are coupled with other favorable conditions such as adequate water supply and proper nutrition. Higher temperatures can lead to faster ripening, which might result in beans that are less dense and have inferior flavor profiles. Warmer conditions can promote the proliferation of pests and diseases, which can damage the coffee plants and reduce yields. Higher temperatures increase the evaporation rate, leading to water stress if irrigation is not sufficient. Water-stressed trees are less productive and more susceptible to diseases. Prolonged exposure to high temperatures can cause physiological stress, reducing the tree's overall health and its ability to produce beans in the long term. In summary, while higher temperatures can sometimes provoke coffee trees to produce more beans, the overall impact is usually negative due to stress and quality issues.

As the stations say, temps have been quite out of the comfortable range and for kinda long. Too many beans is not what the tree likes, if science is any guideThe coffee tree has limited resources and nutrients. If it produces too many settings, the available nutrients get distributed among a larger number of beans, leading to nutrient deficiency. This can result in smaller, less developed beans and a reduction in overall bean quality. Producing a high number of settings places significant stress on the tree. This stress can weaken the tree, making it more susceptible to diseases and pests. It also reduces the tree's ability to recover and produce high-quality beans in subsequent seasons. Overproduction can lead to poor bean development. The beans may not mature properly, resulting in uneven ripening. This inconsistency can affect the flavor profile of the coffee, leading to a lower quality product. .

Cherry on top: Although the initial yield may be high, overproduction can deplete the tree's resources and negatively impact future yields. The tree may produce fewer beans in the following seasons due to the exhaustion of nutrients and energy reserves.

Summation: 1) some farms have irrigation and good fertilization, etc but irrigation does not protect of high on leaf temp overall negative effect ; 2) temps were way out of the comfort range for A and R, by science it means overall damage but not higher yield; 3) not all farms :) :) :) are irrigated, effect on the non-irrigated farms by science is more negative; 4) the problem is not just smaller beans, but also undeveloped (not correctly developed) beans - density is lower - weight is lower - yield is lower; 5) overall quality should remain an issue - there should be less standard quality bags. I would risk to say that Brazil may underproduce :) in 24/25 about 5mb and easy.

Uganda report came out today: 24/25 increased 40kb vs 23/24 (6.9mb vs 6.86mb), R projected 5.895mb in 24/25 vs 5.87mb in 23/24 (+25kb), export will rise from 6.52mb to 6.58mb. (Production 23/24 grew vs 22/23 roughly 300kb.)

Just a quick thought on the record export volumes reported by the ICO. The numbers might be a bit misleading. We've heard reports that producer countries like Vietnam or Colombia are now importing beans from Brazil. They have to import to get beans to fulfill their export obligations. This means the same beans are counted twice, first when they are exported from Brazil and second time when they are exported again from another country. I don't know how big this phenomenon is, but it might be worth considering.

In Brazil, we have always worked on this. There are already plants that are more resistant than others to drought, rust, and nematodes (each one resistant to a disease or disease, but never to all of them). So far, they have not managed to make cacti produce coffee.

Short Dude. Situation when one Member (by ICO, producing country which is NET exporter) imports beans from other origin to fulfill the contract obligations is hardly economically viable, as default would be a cheaper option, macro speaking. The most informative and illustrative indicator to evaluate if export is bearish or bullish, is export vs stocks at destinations for given month, quarter, year, etc. If growing export goes in tact with growing stocks within specified time frame, then it is bearish within that time frame, if growing export is seen on constant or decreasing stocks - bullish. While being primitive, it is stays most simple approach. :)
