SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Chip supplier Qualcomm Inc (O:QCOM) on Tuesday unveiled a new generation of mobile phone processor chips that will power 5G smartphones in the United States as soon as next year.

The key feature of the Snapdragon 855 chip, launched at an event in Hawaii, is a so-called modem for phones to connect to 5G wireless data networks with mobile data speeds of up to 50 or 100 times faster than current 4G networks.

Mobile carriers are investing in 5G networks and are eager to sell 5G phones and data plans to recoup investment costs.

Qualcomm, the largest supplier of mobile phone chips, said Snapdragon 855 would power Samsung 5G smartphones that Verizon Communications Inc (N:VZ) and Samsung Electronics Co Ltd (KS:005930) said on Monday would be released in the United States in the first half of 2019.

The modem would also enable "computer vision" to help phones recognize objects and faces, and support a new Qualcomm fingerprint sensor that can read a user's fingerprint through the glass screen of a smartphone.

The Samsung phone would be a major challenge for Apple Inc (O:AAPL), its biggest rival in the premium handset market in the United States as the iPhone maker is locked in a legal battle with Qualcomm. Citing sources familiar with the matter, Bloomberg reported on Monday that Apple would wait until at least 2020 to release its first 5G iPhones.

Here's what I don't get, phone providers like Verizon pitching a yr ago where 5g and those late model phones all saying 5g is nothing more than stretched 4g. 5g is an entirely different beast. You all bought into it. Here's Q talking about for 2019 coming up with 5g. See the conundrum. Time/ Spectrum pitching 5g, heck there riding on the back side of V. All these lies. Do you really 2ant to pay 1500 for a new 5g AI phone, Why! just so we can pay Version even more than your paying now. When is enough, enough. They have to go 5g and 5 and use AI in order to o process all those phone calls or AKA BANDWITH...... The best PHONE was the aluminum clam shell from Motorola. When a phone was just that a phone. By 2020 5g will be up and running everywhere. Until then it's only available in HIGH DEMOGRAPHIC areas. JMO. I know telecommunication. I ran it from 900 to 2.4 before the 911 incident. Have fun and Merry Xmas, God bless America!
Jabil is Apple's biggest out source for the new tsunami phone and later models. If all goes as planned it will be like the sales one the 1st iPhone.
