U.S. stocks mixed at close of trade; Dow Jones Industrial Average up 0.12%

Investing.com – U.S. stocks were mixed after the close on Monday, as gains in the Financials, Technology and Consumer Services sectors led shares higher while losses in the Utilities, Oil & Gas and Consumer Goods sectors led shares lower.

At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.12%, while the S&P 500 index fell 0.46%, and the NASDAQ Composite index lost 0.27%.

The best performers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE:GS), which rose 6.83% or 16.53 points to trade at 258.66 at the close. Meanwhile, Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE) added 4.96% or 6.81 points to end at 144.09 and JPMorgan Chase & Co (NYSE:JPM) was up 4.32% or 5.14 points to 124.22 in late trade.

The worst performers of the session were Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC), which fell 2.89% or 1.37 points to trade at 46.09 at the close. International Business Machines (NYSE:IBM) declined 1.99% or 2.51 points to end at 123.34 and Coca-Cola Company (NYSE:KO) was down 1.71% or 0.92 points to 52.82.

The top performers on the S&P 500 were Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE:GS) which rose 6.83% to 258.66, Morgan Stanley (NYSE:MS) which was up 5.89% to settle at 67.96 and Apartment Investment and Management Co (NYSE:AIV) which gained 5.53% to close at 4.77.

The worst performers were Occidental Petroleum Corporation (NYSE:OXY) which was down 5.29% to 17.54 in late trade, SL Green Realty Corp (NYSE:SLG) which lost 4.27% to settle at 55.63 and Centene Corp (NYSE:CNC) which was down 4.28% to 58.53 at the close.

The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Big Rock Partners Acquisition Corp (NASDAQ:BRPA) which rose 145.31% to 37.41, NantKwest Inc (NASDAQ:NK) which was up 60.53% to settle at 16.47 and Anterix Inc (NASDAQ:ATEX) which gained 55.07% to close at 45.70.

The worst performers were Sesen Bio Inc (NASDAQ:SESN) which was down 22.41% to 1.3500 in late trade, Cyren Ltd (NASDAQ:CYRN) which lost 19.33% to settle at 1.210 and Uniqure NV (NASDAQ:QURE) which was down 18.08% to 37.64 at the close.

Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the New York Stock Exchange by 2069 to 1026 and 80 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1712 fell and 1282 advanced, while 72 ended unchanged.

Shares in Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE:GS) rose to 52-week highs; up 6.83% or 16.53 to 258.66. Shares in Morgan Stanley (NYSE:MS) rose to 5-year highs; gaining 5.89% or 3.78 to 67.96. Shares in Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE:GS) rose to 52-week highs; up 6.83% or 16.53 to 258.66. Shares in Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE) rose to all time highs; gaining 4.96% or 6.81 to 144.09. Shares in Big Rock Partners Acquisition Corp (NASDAQ:BRPA) rose to all time highs; rising 145.31% or 22.16 to 37.41. Shares in NantKwest Inc (NASDAQ:NK) rose to 3-years highs; rising 60.53% or 6.21 to 16.47.

The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 16.32% to 25.09 a new 1-month high.

Gold Futures for February delivery was down 0.43% or 8.10 to $1880.80 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in February fell 2.92% or 1.44 to hit $47.80 a barrel, while the February Brent oil contract fell 2.85% or 1.49 to trade at $50.77 a barrel.

EUR/USD was down 0.10% to 1.2243, while USD/JPY rose 0.04% to 103.36.

The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.03% at 89.983.
