U.S. stocks mixed at close of trade; Dow Jones Industrial Average down 0.10%

Investing.com – U.S. stocks were mixed after the close on Wednesday, as gains in the Consumer Goods, Utilities and Financials sectors led shares higher while losses in the Oil & Gas, Basic Materials and Consumer Services sectors led shares lower.

At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 0.10%, while the S&P 500 index declined 0.03%, and the NASDAQ Composite index added 0.13%.

The best performers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE:GS), which rose 1.70% or 10.60 points to trade at 635.24 at the close. Meanwhile, JPMorgan Chase & Co (NYSE:JPM) added 1.66% or 4.49 points to end at 274.01 and Merck & Company Inc (NYSE:MRK) was up 1.30% or 1.02 points to 79.30 in late trade.

The worst performers of the session were Visa Inc Class A (NYSE:V), which fell 4.88% or 17.46 points to trade at 340.38 at the close. Boeing Co (NYSE:BA) declined 1.29% or 2.58 points to end at 197.68 and Johnson & Johnson (NYSE:JNJ) was down 1.08% or 1.65 points to 150.73.

The top performers on the S&P 500 were Caesars Entertainment Corporation (NASDAQ:CZR) which rose 4.91% to 27.75, Enphase Energy Inc (NASDAQ:ENPH) which was up 4.18% to settle at 36.38 and Jabil Circuit Inc (NYSE:JBL) which gained 3.95% to close at 204.66.

The worst performers were Mastercard Inc (NYSE:MA) which was down 5.39% to 538.73 in late trade, Visa Inc Class A (NYSE:V) which lost 4.88% to settle at 340.38 and Zoetis Inc (NYSE:ZTS) which was down 4.07% to 155.09 at the close.

The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Nature Wood Group Ltd ADR (NASDAQ:NWGL) which rose 142.03% to 5.62, Kwesst Micro Systems Inc (NASDAQ:KWE) which was up 95.14% to settle at 11.24 and Ptl Inc (NASDAQ:PTLE) which gained 84.44% to close at 0.37.

The worst performers were CERo Therapeutics Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:CERO) which was down 42.01% to 11.50 in late trade, Biomea Fusion Inc (NASDAQ:BMEA) which lost 34.48% to settle at 1.90 and Plus Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:PSTV) which was down 34.38% to 0.20 at the close.

Rising stocks outnumbered declining ones on the New York Stock Exchange by 1473 to 1262 and 111 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1909 rose and 1380 declined, while 165 ended unchanged.

Shares in Jabil Circuit Inc (NYSE:JBL) rose to all time highs; rising 3.95% or 7.77 to 204.66. Shares in Nature Wood Group Ltd ADR (NASDAQ:NWGL) rose to 52-week highs; gaining 142.03% or 3.30 to 5.62. Shares in Plus Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:PSTV) fell to 5-year lows; falling 34.38% or 0.11 to 0.20.

The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 6.71% to 20.15.

Gold Futures for August delivery was down 0.71% or 24.25 to $3,382.65 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in August rose 0.04% or 0.03 to hit $73.30 a barrel, while the August Brent oil contract unchanged 0.00% or 0.00 to trade at $76.45 a barrel.

EUR/USD was unchanged 0.05% to 1.15, while USD/JPY fell 0.08% to 145.13.

The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.07% at 98.46.
