Investing.com – U.S. stocks were lower after the close on Tuesday, as losses in the Basic Materials, Oil & Gas and Industrials sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 1.28%, while the S&P 500 index declined 1.23%, and the NASDAQ Composite index fell 1.13%.
The best performers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Visa Inc Class A (NYSE:V), which rose 1.33% or 2.28 points to trade at 174.29 at the close. Meanwhile, Johnson & Johnson (NYSE:JNJ) added 0.47% or 0.61 points to end at 129.99 and Coca-Cola Company (NYSE:KO) was up 0.39% or 0.21 points to 54.65 in late trade.
The worst performers of the session were 3M Company (NYSE:MMM), which fell 3.66% or 6.02 points to trade at 158.38 at the close. Dow Inc (NYSE:DOW) declined 3.53% or 1.68 points to end at 45.97 and Cisco Systems Inc (NASDAQ:CSCO) was down 3.38% or 1.67 points to 47.74.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were McCormick & Company Incorporated (NYSE:MKC) which rose 6.81% to 166.95, Ulta Beauty Inc (NASDAQ:ULTA) which was up 6.12% to settle at 265.99 and Philip Morris International Inc (NYSE:PM) which gained 2.50% to close at 77.83.
The worst performers were E-TRADE Financial Corporation (NASDAQ:ETFC) which was down 16.43% to 36.51 in late trade, The Charles Schwab Corporation (NYSE:SCHW) which lost 9.73% to settle at 37.76 and Cimarex Energy Co (NYSE:XEC) which was down 5.47% to 45.32 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Naked Brand Group Ltd (NASDAQ:NAKD) which rose 50.44% to 0.051, Sienna Biopharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:SNNA) which was up 49.25% to settle at 0.30 and Cancer Genetics Inc (NASDAQ:CGIX) which gained 47.13% to close at 0.151.
The worst performers were China Customer Relations Centers Inc (NASDAQ:CCRC) which was down 29.96% to 11.20 in late trade, Minerva Neurosciences Inc (NASDAQ:NERV) which lost 26.32% to settle at 5.71 and Aileron Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:ALRN) which was down 26.06% to 0.50 at the close.
Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the New York Stock Exchange by 2183 to 709 and 54 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2022 fell and 612 advanced, while 68 ended unchanged.
Shares in E-TRADE Financial Corporation (NASDAQ:ETFC) fell to 52-week lows; losing 16.43% or 7.18 to 36.51.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 14.29% to 18.56.
Gold Futures for December delivery was up 0.83% or 12.25 to $1485.15 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in November fell 0.17% or 0.09 to hit $53.98 a barrel, while the December Brent oil contract unchanged 0.00% or 0.00 to trade at $59.22 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.03% to 1.0933, while USD/JPY rose 0.00% to 107.75.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.22% at 98.800.
