U.S. stocks lower at close of trade; Dow Jones Industrial Average down 1.10%

Investing.com – U.S. stocks were lower after the close on Wednesday, as losses in the Oil & Gas, Basic Materials and Technology sectors led shares lower.

At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 1.10%, while the S&P 500 index declined 1.20%, and the NASDAQ Composite index declined 1.35%.

The best performers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were JPMorgan Chase & Co (NYSE:JPM), which rose 0.55% or 0.72 points to trade at 132.46 at the close. Meanwhile, Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE:GS) fell 0.32% or 1.10 points to end at 340.87 and Johnson & Johnson (NYSE:JNJ) was down 0.43% or 0.77 points to 176.66 in late trade.

The worst performers of the session were Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL), which fell 3.07% or 3.99 points to trade at 126.04 at the close. Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS) declined 2.55% or 2.20 points to end at 84.17 and Dow Inc (NYSE:DOW) was down 2.34% or 1.20 points to 49.99.

The top performers on the S&P 500 were Generac Holdings Inc (NYSE:GNRC) which rose 5.61% to 96.26, Tesla Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) which was up 3.31% to settle at 112.71 and Illumina Inc (NASDAQ:ILMN) which gained 1.08% to close at 190.81.

The worst performers were SolarEdge Technologies Inc (NASDAQ:SEDG) which was down 5.87% to 275.84 in late trade, APA Corporation (NASDAQ:APA) which lost 5.16% to settle at 45.18 and Southwest Airlines Company (NYSE:LUV) which was down 5.16% to 32.19 at the close.

The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Kala Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:KALA) which rose 218.37% to 12.48, Minerva Surgical Inc (NASDAQ:UTRS) which was up 66.15% to settle at 0.27 and Transcode Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:RNAZ) which gained 51.82% to close at 0.61.

The worst performers were Minerva Neurosciences Inc (NASDAQ:NERV) which was down 39.15% to 1.43 in late trade, Model Performance Acquisition Corp (NASDAQ:MPAC) which lost 35.54% to settle at 8.78 and Lightjump Acquisition Corp (NASDAQ:LJAQ) which was down 37.11% to 11.95 at the close.

Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the New York Stock Exchange by 2404 to 714 and 73 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2415 fell and 1342 advanced, while 137 ended unchanged.

Shares in Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) fell to 52-week lows; falling 3.07% or 3.99 to 126.04. Shares in Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS) fell to 5-year lows; down 2.55% or 2.20 to 84.17. Shares in Minerva Neurosciences Inc (NASDAQ:NERV) fell to all time lows; falling 39.15% or 0.92 to 1.43. Shares in Model Performance Acquisition Corp (NASDAQ:MPAC) fell to all time lows; losing 35.54% or 4.84 to 8.78.

The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 2.26% to 22.14.

Gold Futures for February delivery was down 0.59% or 10.70 to $1,812.40 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in February fell 1.09% or 0.87 to hit $78.66 a barrel, while the March Brent oil contract fell 1.19% or 1.01 to trade at $83.67 a barrel.

EUR/USD was unchanged 0.25% to 1.06, while USD/JPY rose 0.72% to 134.45.

The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.34% at 104.24.
