Investing.com – U.S. stocks were lower after the close on Wednesday, as losses in the Technology, Consumer Goods and Consumer Services sectors led shares lower.

At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.59%, while the S&P 500 index fell 1.06%, and the NASDAQ Composite index lost 2.16%.

The best performers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE:GS), which rose 1.32% or 3.16 points to trade at 242.00 at the close. Meanwhile, 3M Company (NYSE:MMM) added 1.11% or 1.91 points to end at 174.37 and Home Depot Inc (NYSE:HD) was up 1.15% or 3.01 points to 264.73 in late trade.

The worst performers of the session were Salesforce.com Inc (NYSE:CRM), which fell 3.12% or 7.11 points to trade at 220.75 at the close. Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) declined 2.45% or 3.05 points to end at 121.33 and Boeing Co (NYSE:BA) was down 2.35% or 5.57 points to 231.00.

The top performers on the S&P 500 were Nielsen Holdings PLC (NYSE:NLSN) which rose 8.05% to 18.93, Lowe’s Companies Inc (NYSE:LOW) which was up 5.90% to settle at 160.17 and Eli Lilly and Company (NYSE:LLY) which gained 5.87% to close at 158.06.

The worst performers were Qorvo Inc (NASDAQ:QRVO) which was down 5.69% to 160.29 in late trade, Fortinet Inc (NASDAQ:FTNT) which lost 5.13% to settle at 124.90 and Skyworks Solutions Inc (NASDAQ:SWKS) which was down 4.85% to 148.24 at the close.

The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Greenwich Lifesciences Inc (NASDAQ:GLSI) which rose 1000.00% to 90.00, Xenetic Biosciences Inc (NASDAQ:XBIO) which was up 228.70% to settle at 3.550 and Rocket Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:RCKT) which gained 80.74% to close at 57.89.

The worst performers were Pluristem Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:PSTI) which was down 38.92% to 7.00 in late trade, Atossa Genetics Inc (NASDAQ:ATOS) which lost 38.64% to settle at 0.877 and Sino-Global Shipping America Ltd (NASDAQ:SINO) which was down 37.66% to 2.4000 at the close.

Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the New York Stock Exchange by 1711 to 1366 and 100 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2025 fell and 982 advanced, while 54 ended unchanged.

Shares in Greenwich Lifesciences Inc (NASDAQ:GLSI) rose to all time highs; rising 1000.00% or 84.80 to 90.00. Shares in Xenetic Biosciences Inc (NASDAQ:XBIO) rose to 52-week highs; gaining 228.70% or 2.470 to 3.550. Shares in Rocket Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:RCKT) rose to all time highs; rising 80.74% or 25.86 to 57.89.

The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 8.95% to 22.53.

Gold Futures for February delivery was down 2.07% or 38.85 to $1836.05 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in January fell 0.13% or 0.06 to hit $45.54 a barrel, while the February Brent oil contract rose 0.04% or 0.02 to trade at $48.86 a barrel.

EUR/USD was down 0.23% to 1.2073, while USD/JPY rose 0.09% to 104.25.

The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.14% at 91.093.
