U.S. stocks lower at close of trade; Dow Jones Industrial Average down 0.17%

Investing.com – U.S. stocks were lower after the close on Wednesday, as losses in the Utilities, Consumer Services and Telecoms sectors led shares lower.

At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.17%, while the S&P 500 index fell 0.04%, and the NASDAQ Composite index lost 0.28%.

The best performers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Home Depot Inc (NYSE:HD), which rose 1.25% or 1.91 points to trade at 155.26 at the close. Meanwhile, The Travelers Companies Inc (NYSE:TRV) added 1.24% or 1.60 points to end at 130.15 and Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE) was up 0.74% or 0.44 points to 59.90 in late trade.

The worst performers of the session were Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS), which fell 3.88% or 4.15 points to trade at 102.83 at the close. Boeing Co (NYSE:BA) declined 1.58% or 3.77 points to end at 234.31 and United Technologies Corporation (NYSE:UTX) was down 0.84% or 0.99 points to 117.20.

The top performers on the S&P 500 were Cimarex Energy Co (NYSE:XEC) which rose 7.46% to 100.86, International Flavors & Fragrances Inc (NYSE:IFF) which was up 3.74% to settle at 139.68 and Iron Mountain Incorporated (NYSE:IRM) which gained 3.04% to close at 38.31.

The worst performers were DENTSPLY International Inc (NASDAQ:XRAY) which was down 8.47% to 56.21 in late trade, Priceline.com Incorporated (NASDAQ:PCLN) which lost 6.94% to settle at 1906.80 and Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS) which was down 3.88% to 102.83 at the close.

The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Matlin & Partners Acquisition Corp (NASDAQ:MPAC) which rose 169.14% to 26.16, Digiliti Money Inc (NASDAQ:DGLT) which was up 54.05% to settle at 0.5700 and Natera Inc (NASDAQ:NTRA) which gained 26.84% to close at 10.35.

The worst performers were Surgery Partners Inc (NASDAQ:SGRY) which was down 36.55% to 12.15 in late trade, Inpixon (NASDAQ:INPX) which lost 28.17% to settle at 0.3700 and Maiden Holdings Ltd (NASDAQ:MHLD) which was down 26.78% to 7.72 at the close.

Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the New York Stock Exchange by 2174 to 950 and 126 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1793 fell and 722 advanced, while 129 ended unchanged.

Shares in Surgery Partners Inc (NASDAQ:SGRY) fell to 52-week lows; falling 36.55% or 7.00 to 12.15. Shares in Inpixon (NASDAQ:INPX) fell to 3-years lows; down 28.17% or 0.1451 to 0.3700. Shares in Maiden Holdings Ltd (NASDAQ:MHLD) fell to 5-year lows; losing 26.78% or 2.83 to 7.72.

The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 1.92% to 11.17 a new 1-month high.

Gold Futures for December delivery was up 1.54% or 19.42 to $1282.02 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in September rose 0.85% or 0.42 to hit $49.59 a barrel, while the October Brent oil contract rose 1.13% or 0.59 to trade at $52.73 a barrel.

EUR/USD was up 0.06% to 1.1759, while USD/JPY fell 0.30% to 110.01.

The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.07% at 93.41.
