U.S. stocks higher at close of trade; Dow Jones Industrial Average up 1.88%

Investing.com – U.S. stocks were higher after the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Industrials, Financials and Consumer Services sectors led shares higher.

At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average added 1.88%, while the S&P 500 index climbed 1.68%, and the NASDAQ Composite index gained 1.71%.

The best performers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE:GS), which rose 4.83% or 13.27 points to trade at 288.00 at the close. Meanwhile, Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT) added 4.18% or 7.73 points to end at 192.45 and American Express Company (NYSE:AXP) was up 3.93% or 4.59 points to 121.62 in late trade.

The worst performers of the session were Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc (NASDAQ:WBA), which fell 1.13% or 0.55 points to trade at 48.28 at the close. International Business Machines (NYSE:IBM) declined 0.66% or 0.79 points to end at 119.75 and Johnson & Johnson (NYSE:JNJ) was down 0.13% or 0.21 points to 162.50.

The top performers on the S&P 500 were Waters Corporation (NYSE:WAT) which rose 8.51% to 291.69, Expedia Inc (NASDAQ:EXPE) which was up 6.83% to settle at 136.00 and MGM Resorts International (NYSE:MGM) which gained 5.84% to close at 30.98.

The worst performers were Harley-Davidson Inc (NYSE:HOG) which was down 17.68% to 33.05 in late trade, Macerich Company (NYSE:MAC) which lost 12.42% to settle at 12.27 and Macy’s Inc (NYSE:M) which was down 7.41% to 13.62 at the close.

The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Cassava Sciences Inc (NASDAQ:SAVA) which rose 134.01% to 53.80, Ocugen, Inc (NASDAQ:OCGN) which was up 75.14% to settle at 3.1700 and AEterna Zentaris Inc (NASDAQ:AEZS) which gained 43.57% to close at 1.005.

The worst performers were Immunovant Inc (NASDAQ:IMVT) which was down 42.17% to 25.04 in late trade, Mingzhu Logistics Holdings Ltd (NASDAQ:YGMZ) which lost 42.03% to settle at 13.45 and Koss Corporation (NASDAQ:KOSS) which was down 37.26% to 21.960 at the close.

Rising stocks outnumbered declining ones on the New York Stock Exchange by 2392 to 721 and 69 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2313 rose and 784 declined, while 58 ended unchanged.

Shares in Waters Corporation (NYSE:WAT) rose to all time highs; up 8.51% or 22.88 to 291.69. Shares in Cassava Sciences Inc (NASDAQ:SAVA) rose to 5-year highs; up 134.01% or 30.81 to 53.80. Shares in Ocugen, Inc (NASDAQ:OCGN) rose to 52-week highs; up 75.14% or 1.3600 to 3.1700.

The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 15.34% to 25.60.

Gold Futures for April delivery was down 1.46% or 27.25 to $1836.65 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in March rose 2.33% or 1.25 to hit $54.80 a barrel, while the April Brent oil contract rose 2.17% or 1.22 to trade at $57.55 a barrel.

EUR/USD was down 0.34% to 1.2019, while USD/JPY rose 0.17% to 105.08.

The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.21% at 91.213.
