Investing.com – U.S. stocks were higher after the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Consumer Goods, Basic Materials and Technology sectors led shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 1.07% to hit a new 1-month high, while the S&P 500 index climbed 1.63%, and the NASDAQ Composite index added 2.25%.
The best performers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE), which rose 4.22% or 3.71 points to trade at 91.72 at the close. Meanwhile, American Express Company (NYSE:AXP) added 3.76% or 5.33 points to end at 146.96 and Boeing Co (NYSE:BA) was up 3.23% or 4.59 points to 146.63 in late trade.
The worst performers of the session were The Travelers Companies Inc (NYSE:TRV), which fell 2.01% or 3.62 points to trade at 176.17 at the close. Amgen Inc (NASDAQ:AMGN) declined 0.51% or 1.33 points to end at 259.99 and UnitedHealth Group Incorporated (NYSE:UNH) was down 0.20% or 1.10 points to 540.50.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Centene Corp (NYSE:CNC) which rose 10.47% to 83.75, IQVIA Holdings Inc (NYSE:IQV) which was up 10.17% to settle at 197.83 and Charles River Laboratories (NYSE:CRL) which gained 8.86% to close at 218.64.
The worst performers were Brown & Brown Inc (NYSE:BRO) which was down 12.65% to 55.10 in late trade, Cadence Design Systems Inc (NASDAQ:CDNS) which lost 5.55% to settle at 151.32 and W. R. Berkley Corp (NYSE:WRB) which was down 4.64% to 69.20 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Taysha Gene Therapies Inc (NASDAQ:TSHA) which rose 97.35% to 2.98, Fangdd Network Group Ltd (NASDAQ:DUO) which was up 89.64% to settle at 1.26 and Revelation Biosciences Inc (NASDAQ:REVB) which gained 68.37% to close at 0.41.
The worst performers were Hoth Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:HOTH) which was down 26.42% to 0.24 in late trade, Mana Capital Acquisition Corp (NASDAQ:MAAQ) which lost 24.18% to settle at 5.99 and TuanChe ADR (NASDAQ:TC) which was down 18.45% to 6.32 at the close.
Rising stocks outnumbered declining ones on the New York Stock Exchange by 2614 to 496 and 102 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2985 rose and 773 declined, while 196 ended unchanged.
Shares in Hoth Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:HOTH) fell to all time lows; down 26.42% or 0.09 to 0.24. Shares in Mana Capital Acquisition Corp (NASDAQ:MAAQ) fell to all time lows; falling 24.18% or 1.91 to 5.99.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 4.66% to 28.46 a new 1-month low.
Gold Futures for December delivery was up 0.21% or 3.45 to $1,657.55 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in December rose 0.40% or 0.34 to hit $84.92 a barrel, while the January Brent oil contract fell 0.02% or 0.02 to trade at $91.19 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.94% to 1.00, while USD/JPY fell 0.71% to 147.90.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 1.03% at 110.75.
