U.S. stocks higher at close of trade; Dow Jones Industrial Average up 0.20%

Investing.com – U.S. stocks were higher after the close on Wednesday, as gains in the Oil & Gas, Technology and Financials sectors led shares higher.

At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.20% to hit a new all time high, while the S&P 500 index gained 0.07%, and the NASDAQ Composite index added 0.32%.

The best performers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT), which rose 2.20% or 3.40 points to trade at 158.22 at the close. Meanwhile, Boeing Co (NYSE:BA) added 1.53% or 5.93 points to end at 392.30 and Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) was up 1.37% or 0.66 points to 48.76 in late trade.

The worst performers of the session were Procter & Gamble Company (NYSE:PG), which fell 1.58% or 1.33 points to trade at 83.03 at the close. Coca-Cola Company (NYSE:KO) declined 1.38% or 0.64 points to end at 45.87 and Walmart Inc (NYSE:WMT) was down 1.14% or 1.08 points to 94.07.

The top performers on the S&P 500 were Chesapeake Energy Corporation (NYSE:CHK) which rose 4.65% to 4.730, Valero Energy Corporation (NYSE:VLO) which was up 3.87% to settle at 119.99 and Marathon Petroleum Corporation (NYSE:MPC) which gained 3.73% to close at 86.39.

The worst performers were Acuity Brands Inc (NYSE:AYI) which was down 13.17% to 135.01 in late trade, International Paper Company (NYSE:IP) which lost 4.10% to settle at 48.24 and Edwards Lifesciences Corporation (NYSE:EW) which was down 3.92% to 155.74 at the close.

The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Pain Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:PTIE) which rose 200.55% to 2.900, Helios and Matheson Analytics Inc (NASDAQ:HMNY) which was up 174.44% to settle at 0.036 and Inpixon (NASDAQ:INPX) which gained 104.88% to close at 0.4200.

The worst performers were I-AM Capital Acquisition Co (NASDAQ:IAM) which was down 35.41% to 6.46 in late trade, Davidstea Inc (NASDAQ:DTEA) which lost 25.00% to settle at 3.12 and Cellectar Biosciences Inc (NASDAQ:CLRB) which was down 19.24% to 2.9800 at the close.

Rising stocks outnumbered declining ones on the New York Stock Exchange by 1570 to 1504 and 94 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1698 rose and 945 declined, while 75 ended unchanged.

Shares in International Paper Company (NYSE:IP) fell to 52-week lows; down 4.10% or 2.06 to 48.24. Shares in Marathon Petroleum Corporation (NYSE:MPC) rose to all time highs; up 3.73% or 3.11 to 86.39. Shares in Boeing Co (NYSE:BA) rose to all time highs; gaining 1.53% or 5.93 to 392.30. Shares in I-AM Capital Acquisition Co (NASDAQ:IAM) fell to all time lows; losing 35.41% or 3.54 to 6.46.

The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 3.49% to 11.63 a new 1-month low.

Gold Futures for December delivery was down 0.39% or 4.70 to $1202.30 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in November rose 1.32% or 0.99 to hit $76.22 a barrel, while the December Brent oil contract rose 1.38% or 1.17 to trade at $85.97 a barrel.

EUR/USD was down 0.36% to 1.1505, while USD/JPY rose 0.70% to 114.46.

The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.38% at 95.49.
