U.S. stocks lower at close of trade; Dow Jones Industrial Average down 1.09%

Investing.com – U.S. stocks were lower after the close on Tuesday, as losses in the Basic Materials, Technology and Industrials sectors led shares lower.

At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 1.09%, while the S&P 500 index declined 1.23%, and the NASDAQ Composite index lost 1.50%.

The best performers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were EI du Pont de Nemours and Company (NYSE:DD), which rose 0.68% or 0.33 points to trade at 48.57 at the close. Meanwhile, Johnson & Johnson (NYSE:JNJ) added 0.12% or 0.11 points to end at 93.24 and General Electric Company (NYSE:GE) was up 0.08% or 0.02 points to 25.11 in late trade.

The worst performers of the session were United Technologies Corporation (NYSE:UTX), which fell 3.66% or 3.35 points to trade at 88.20 at the close. Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE:GS) declined 1.98% or 3.63 points to end at 179.72 and Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) was down 1.70% or 0.50 points to 28.66.

The top performers on the S&P 500 were Dollar Tree Inc (NASDAQ:DLTR) which rose 1.96% to 69.18, Adobe Systems Incorporated (NASDAQ:ADBE) which was up 1.61% to settle at 84.66 and Pentair Ltd (NYSE:PNR) which gained 1.61% to close at 51.27.

The worst performers were BorgWarner Inc (NYSE:BWA) which was down 7.60% to 39.37 in late trade, ConAgra Foods Inc (NYSE:CAG) which lost 7.08% to settle at 39.40 and Mosaic Company (NYSE:MOS) which was down 7.03% to 33.88 at the close.

The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Wave Systems Corp (NASDAQ:WAVX) which rose 34.42% to 0.214, Great Basin Scientific Inc (NASDAQ:GBSN) which was up 27.81% to settle at 0.09 and Cemtrex Inc (NASDAQ:CETX) which gained 24.07% to close at 4.3300.

The worst performers were Wafergen Bi (NASDAQ:WGBS) which was down 36.92% to 2.05 in late trade, FreeSeas Inc (NASDAQ:FREE) which lost 28.17% to settle at 0.194 and Horsehead Holding Corp (NASDAQ:ZINC) which was down 18.25% to 4.12 at the close.

Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the New York Stock Exchange by 2186 to 353 and 1 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1990 fell and 568 advanced, while 44 ended unchanged.

Shares in BorgWarner Inc (NYSE:BWA) fell to 52-week lows; falling 7.60% or 3.24 to 39.37. Shares in Mosaic Company (NYSE:MOS) fell to 5-year lows; down 7.03% or 2.56 to 33.88. Shares in United Technologies Corporation (NYSE:UTX) fell to 52-week lows; falling 3.66% or 3.35 to 88.20. Shares in FreeSeas Inc (NASDAQ:FREE) fell to 52-week lows; losing 28.17% or 0.076 to 0.194. Shares in Horsehead Holding Corp (NASDAQ:ZINC) fell to 5-year lows; down 18.25% or 0.92 to 4.12.

The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 10.82% to 22.32.

Gold for December delivery was down 0.74% or 8.40 to $1124.40 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in November fell 1.55% or 0.73 to hit $46.23 a barrel, while the November Brent oil contract rose 0.14% or 0.07 to trade at $48.99 a barrel.

EUR/USD was down 0.57% to 1.1126, while USD/JPY fell 0.34% to 120.14.

The US Dollar Index was up 0.48% at 96.50.
