Investing.com – U.S. stocks were lower after the close on Monday, as losses in the Utilities, Industrials and Oil & Gas sectors led shares lower.
At the close in New York, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.45%, while the S&P 500 index declined 0.46%, and the NASDAQ Composite index fell 0.15%.
The best performers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were JPMorgan Chase & Co (NYSE:JPM), which rose 0.60% or 0.37 points to trade at 62.07 at the close. Meanwhile, UnitedHealth Group Incorporated (NYSE:UNH) added 0.31% or 0.37 points to end at 119.37 and The Travelers Companies Inc (NYSE:TRV) was up 0.20% or 0.22 points to 107.87 in late trade.
The worst performers of the session were General Electric Company (NYSE:GE), which fell 3.09% or 0.88 points to trade at 27.63 at the close. Johnson & Johnson (NYSE:JNJ) declined 1.48% or 1.51 points to end at 100.55 and Visa Inc (NYSE:V) was down 1.10% or 0.73 points to 65.61.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Netflix Inc (NASDAQ:NFLX) which rose 4.42% to 474.68, Emerson Electric Company (NYSE:EMR) which was up 2.73% to settle at 58.40 and Genworth Financial Inc (NYSE:GNW) which gained 2.72% to close at 7.94.
The worst performers were Symantec Corporation (NASDAQ:SYMC) which was down 5.65% to 24.14 in late trade, Tesoro Corporation (NYSE:TSO) which lost 4.49% to settle at 82.12 and Fossil Group Inc (NASDAQ:FOSL) which was down 4.07% to 81.89 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Builders FirstSource Inc (NASDAQ:BLDR) which rose 67.68% to 11.57, Sysorex Gbl (NASDAQ:SYRX) which was up 55.92% to settle at 2.37 and China Gerui Advanced Materials (NASDAQ:CHOP) which gained 51.40% to close at 2.710.
The worst performers were WPCS International Incorporated (NASDAQ:WPCS) which was down 17.39% to 0.190 in late trade, FreeSeas Inc (NASDAQ:FREE) which lost 16.67% to settle at 0.043 and China Auto Logistics Inc (NASDAQ:CALI) which was down 12.80% to 1.430 at the close.
Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the New York Stock Exchange by 1823 to 984 and 1 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1469 fell and 1329 advanced, while 7 ended unchanged.
Shares in Builders FirstSource Inc (NASDAQ:BLDR) rose to 5-year highs; gaining 67.68% or 4.67 to 11.57.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 10.81% to 13.94.
Gold for June delivery was down 0.44% or 5.30 to $1199.30 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in May rose 0.73% or 0.38 to hit $52.02 a barrel, while the June Brent oil contract rose 0.34% or 0.20 to trade at $59.15 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.26% to 1.0575, while USD/JPY fell 0.08% to 120.09.
The US Dollar Index was up 0.11% at 99.74.
