Investing.com -- U.S. stock markets recouped some early losses, but remained lower Tuesday morning as the market digested President Donald Trump’s warning that hundreds of thousands of Americans may die of the Covid-19 coronavirus.

Trump’s radical shift away from earlier assurances that the U.S. would soon have the virus under control came as the number of confirmed cases in the country topped 189,000, more than double those reported by China. The outbreak’s rapid spread puts huge question marks over when  economic life in the U.S. will return to normal.

By 11:30 AM ET (1530 GMT), the Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 634 points, or 2.9%. The S&P 500 was down 3.1% and the NASDAQ Composite was down 2.4%.

The Dow endured its worst quarter since 2008 in the three months to March, falling 23.2%. The S&P 500 fell 20% and the Nasdaq fell 14.2%.

Looking to economic data, the ISM manufacturing index fell less than expected, but with the caveat that respondents would have weighed in any time during March, so the complete Covid-19 impact wouldn't have been captured. Earlier, ADP’s private payrolls report for March failed to add much to existing knowledge, covering only the period up until March 12, that is, before the record rise in initial jobless claims last week.

Howard Marks, co-charman of Oaktree Capital, said in a letter to clients on Tuesday that although asset prices had obviously responded to the threat of the virus, still weren’t reflecting the potential for worse news flow. He added that he still expects asset prices to fall.

Marks noted that the immediate danger to health and life distinguished the current crisis from the last one in 2008.

“Social isolation, disease and death, economic contraction, enormous reliance on government action and uncertainty about the long-term effects are all with us, and the main questions surround how far they will go,” Marks wrote.

The travel sector was again in focus, after the International Air Travel Association warned that most airlines would run out of money within two to three months if the current situation continued.

Delta Air Lines  (NYSE:DAL) stock was down 13% while American Airlines (NASDAQ:AAL) stock was down 8.5%. United Airlines (NASDAQ:UAL) stock was down 11.5% while Southwest Airlines (NYSE:LUV) stock was down a relatively modest 7.1%.

Another travel company in the spotlight is cruise operator Carnival (NYSE:CCL), which is hoping to price a capital raising of $6 billion split three ways between senior debt ($3 billion), convertible notes ($1.75 billion) and new stock ($1.25 billion).

Carnival stock was down 18% while rival Royal Caribbean Cruises stock (NYSE:RCL) stock was down 12%.

Elsewhere, Zoom Video (NASDAQ:ZM) stock was down 4.6% as some investors took their chips off the table in the wake of reports that New York attorney-general Letitia James is looking into its data privacy policy. Recent reports suggested that Zoom is forwarding customers’ data to Facebook (NASDAQ:FB), even when they don’t have a Facebook account.

Do not listen to your President. Stay at home in the entire US. Corona is very contagious and the US health system is not going to be able to help all patients. US trajectory is far worse than Italy's. Your President could have saved tenthousands of lives if he would have locked down much earlier and nationwide. Stay safe, protect yourself, protect others. Stay home!

Let's bail out the companies again with government money so they can keep paying their dividend. After all, we don't want the wealthy to lose as much as they did in 2008 when the government had to replenish their wealth.

#1 India issued warning and alerts on day 1 nationwide on cell phones and continue to do so #2 National lockdown for 21 days invoked by prime minister #3 100 % international air travel ban #4 100% domestic air travel ban #5 All trains services suspended. so life is lockdown as states , city borders are not allowing road travel and local in city police enforcing lockdown ofcourse excluding essential services , this was difficult 1st week , 2 more week to go when things should open up gradually. overall I think this will make difference in few thousand ( India covid19 cases ) vs hundreds thousands ( here in US covid 19 cases ).

mad god Redistributing wealth through central banking is communism.  Any form of central banking purchase using taxpayer money is communism and a redistribution of wealth.  The joke is America is using the communist playbook and pretending its capitalism.  Feel free to explain how handing trillions in taxpayer dollars to irresponsible over leveraged corporate execs and bankers is capitalism?  They are the pigs in Animal Farm.  You should read the book.

I am a Korean ordinary people. I want to strongly recommend these suggestions. It's easy to totally stop Corona 19. Individuals should: (1) Be sure to wear a mask. A mask doesn't protect me. I can be infected and I don’t know the fact, but it prevents my cough from splashing out to the others, which is a very important mask role(to protect the others than only my face). Therefore, ‘everyone’(no execption) should wear a mask. To do that, just wear a cloth mask. Use it for one day, wash it, dry it, and use it again. No disposable mask is required. (2) And, make a hand sanitizer and carry it and hand sanitize it very often. It can be easily made by Water mixed with ethyl alcohol, in a small plastic bottle. It will serve as a very effective, social defense. If these two are kept, it can prevent infection very effectively, save your disaster.

With Trump's inaction you are facing the possibility of millions dying. Do some reading about what is really happening elsewhere in the world. Wake up America! But wait a minute. How many Americans die on a typical year? Will 200,000 additional people, mostly very old (as unfortunate as it may be to them) make really an economical dent to a country of 300,000 people? Will people from now on stop buying clothes, going to restaurants, travelling and enjoying life? Are we going to die while leaving for fear of death? I´m sure not. Stop fear-mongering. Man-up everybody already.

if 200,000 people die out of a country with 300,000 population, then yes 66% of the population dying would have major consequences, but good thing for us theres over 300,000,000 people so, to answer your question, no, not really lol

That what you are talking is so called" crowd immunity" wich Boris Johnson tried ti implement in the UK at the beggining of pandemy. Fortuntelly he changed his mind because this would result in cca 500000 to 1000000 deaths only in UK. Now if you have 330 millions in USA, and death percentage is not like in Germany 1.1% or in Italy 11. 5%, let say 2.5% like for now in USA, this would be 70% of 330 mill people is 231 mill infected, and 5.7 mill deaths.

Son of Mario, back in 2015 was told there were no ventilators there and he didn't buy any, instead he just spent the money on solar panels in upstate New York. Brilliant decision. He, the rest of the hate-filled, loathsome Democrats all screamed that he was restricting travel. remember? Resist, right? So now they blame our great president for this. During the the impeachment (part 2)The way I see it, people that play games should stick with games as they most likely lack basic vocational skills.

Chris Martin  see what i mean by political troll on both sides. lmao. you're a prime example why both parties refuse to work with each other instead of calling each other names. the virus started in Dec 2019, no one in 2015 can tell there will be a virus outbreak in late 2019, nor does it take 4 years to get medical supply/equipment to combat a virus outbreak. that being said, democrats shouldn't have been against any travel restriction, nor should they be against the idea of locking down NYC permanently till the situation is cleared. i wish more people can see both sides of the matter more and think logically like a normal rational person instead of sticking their head by the party of their choice. you guys are the reason why neither party respect the people of the other party and the base of the other party. every congressmen/women in dc work for every citizen of the US regardless of the citizen's party of choice.

James Holmgren  what trump did was correct when he decided to restrict traveling from China. what he did wrong is he didn't follow up and apply further restriction with EU due to their lack of travel restriction with China. and after that, he should have been preparing for a breakout in case there is one which he didn't do. good start but bad follow up.
