S&P 500 in Ugly Reversal as Tech Wreck Dashes Path to Record High

Investing.com –  The S&P 500 ended Tuesday in the red as a wave of selling hit stocks late in the day on reports that fiscal talks on the next coronavirus stimulus package had reached a stalemate.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.37%, or 103 points. The S&P 500 fell 0.79%, while the Nasdaq Composite fell 1.69%.

In an interview with Fox News, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell confirmed that talks between the Democrats and the White House were at "a stalemate," souring investor optimism that lawmakers will agree on a new round of fiscal stimulus sooner rather than later.

Industrials pared gains on the news, as investors reined in bets on travel stocks, with the airlines, in particular, losing wind.

American Airlines (NASDAQ:AAL), United Airlines (NASDAQ:UAL) gave up gains to turn negative, while  Delta Air Lines (NYSE:DAL) ended up 1%.

Boeing (NYSE:BA) closed up just 0.4%, after shrugging off earlier data showing that the pace of order cancellations last month outweighed the pace of new orders its customers continue to pull orders for its much-maligned 737 MAX jets.

Tech's move deeper into the red also exacerbated the downside in the broader market, paced by a decline in the so-called fab 5 companies.

Facebook (NASDAQ:FB), Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOGL), Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL), Amazon.com (NASDAQ:AMZN) and Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT), which account for about 25% of S&P 500, all fell.

On the vaccine front, Russia became the first country to approve a Covid-19 vaccine, which President Vladimir Putin said had already been given to his daughter.

But while many health professionals have raised questions over the safety and efficacy of the Russian-dubbed "Sputnik-V" vaccine, which went into clinical trials less than two months ago on June 17, the news helped lift investor optimism that an inoculation could be found sooner rather than later.

Financials held onto some gains, thanks to a jump in banks following a move higher in bond yields.

JPMorgan (NYSE:JPM) was up 3.2%, while Goldman Sachs (NYSE:GS) rose 0.8% and Bank of America (NYSE:BAC) was up more than 1%.

Higher interest rates are seen as a boon for banks, boosting net interest margin – the difference between the interest income generated by banks and the amount of interest paid out to their depositors.

In earnings news, Novavax (NASDAQ:NVAX), which is in the midst of developing a potential coronavirus vaccine, fell 16% as the company's announcement that three contracts for its potential coronavirus treatment were not exclusive offset better-than-expected quarterly results.

Canada Goose (NYSE:GOOS) fell 5% after the retailer's gloomy guidance offset quarterly results that were not as bad as feared.

Anybody else see a correction in the market the rest of the week? How about a bounce in the dollar? I have been positioned for both since Sunday night. Its quite overbought.
It will rebound tomorrow. you should ve bought at end of day.
Stock market all time highs tonight.
You got it right nice call, makes no sense but still great call
It went down because of Kamala Harris. lol
Tech is going to take it all down for our double dip recession.  It was a nice run.
Didn't the market already know that the stimulus talks were stalemate? I think it's just profit taking activity after the many days of bull run.
Out the window...
That is not an ugly reversal. If you want to see what that looks like take a look at silver. Don't worry though because you have the Fed put and the stonk market always goes up. I hope the market drops so fast that people are jumping.
everybody: "Biden wont pick Kamala she is the worst possible choice especially with her tough on crime stance"...Biden "Hold my adult diapers..."
congratulations to trump for biden's handlers handing trump 2020
kamala harris attacked biden and his character viciously at the debates, and has a terrible record destroying black communities through tough on crime stances... biden clearly has advanced dementia
"AOC calls for wealth tax as billionaires flee big cities".... my goodness democrats are st.upid
Trump: 'Some people would say men are insulted' by Joe Biden choosing a woman as VP .. __ Whow. This statement by Trump says a lot about his small mind and that of his supporters. Misogynist and Racism are not that far apart. No future for Trump with such a mindset, unless Americans have truly lost theirs. __ The white majority would be guilty by association to continue voting for a a misogynist and racist. __ Trump is standing in the way of progress for America. Trump's firing in less than 90 days shows a.) that America can learn from the past (Trump keeps proving he can't), and b.) shows that Americans want to make a serious effort at ending systemic racism and promote leaders that give our better half of society, women, a fair chance of being equal.
guess Joe and segregation aren't a thing?
, you have mote issues you racist
Get some fresh air, Mr Sundo. You've been reading the tr.ash from Reuters for far too long
And just like that Vaccine news... so predictable its laughable
MAGA.Trump will roll over the democrats with ease.
he is in full campaign mode already. that's him at his best. he was born to run for president. such a spectacle
Doubtful.
every single news channel... "biden wont pick kamala because her tough on crime record will be bad for him"... demented biden, "come on man, im picking kamala! want a push up contest, cornpop?!"
Biden was “tough on crime” himself. Much tougher than Trump. He was the architect of the 1994 Crime Bill. He and Kamala are kindred spirits.
But Eddie, will Biden carry her purse? LOL!
his family is known for selling seats in governmental positions. Apparently he is above the law.
"next coronavirus stimulus package had reached a stalemate." Oh come ON!!! These talks have been at a "stalemate" for weeks now. It's because of Kamala "Wait Till They Get a Load of Me" Harris.
someone got the news earlier that Kamala would be the next president and gloom and doom would follow
o pity, I was on the way to buy some stonks, but waited till spy hit 4000. Because you know, quality is expensive.
TQQQ!
*SQQQ
This is because those *****congress of the US can't compose themselves to reach a stimulus package
The Democrats gave the GOP a package three months ago and Republicans only started caring about it after benefits expired. Nice alternative history though.
I would bet the ranch that even if the GOP had looked at the bill in May, the two parties would still be debating and would still have let the unemployment benefits lapse. The Democrats would continue to hold out up until now. They just crafted a ridiculously expensive bill in May so that they could claim that they’ve been waiting. Beautiful dog and pony show.
Rediculous ********headline
$p@z
I don't even think it's really a reversal. it'll be back up tomorrow.
oh yea. Itll gap up to ATH on futures. Its the only and smartest way to break through resistance. Feed overnight headlines on China/Vaccine/Stimulus and then market sideways every day on just the news. Itll gap up so hard tonight. Cant let it get that close and not break it. PPT!
only hunt of bears , We have vaccine , manipulators want hunt more bears , Bullish
