(Reuters) - Mall operator Simon Property Group Inc (NYSE:SPG) has been in talks with Amazon.com Inc (NASDAQ:AMZN) about turning some of its department-store sites into Amazon fulfillment centers, The Wall Street Journal reported https://www.wsj.com/articles/amazon-and-giant-mall-operator-look-at-turning-sears-j-c-penney-stores-into-fulfillment-centers-11596992863?mod=searchresults&page=1&pos=3 on Sunday.

The two companies have explored converting retail space formerly occupied by J.C. Penney Co Inc and Sears Holdings Corp into Amazon distribution centers, while in some cases, Simon and Amazon explored buying out occupied space from the retailers, the report said, citing sources.

Simon's discussions with Amazon have been under way for months and began before the coronavirus pandemic, according to the report.

It is possible that the two sides could fail to reach an agreement, the report said, citing the sources.

A spokeswoman for Amazon said the company has a policy of not commenting on rumors or speculation, when contacted by Reuters. Simon Property did not respond to a Reuters request for comment. Both J.C. Penney and Sears declined to comment.

"Who needs a mall anyway?" Says Amazon
Killing of small and medium size  business by internet monsters continues. Shoppers are forced to blindly buy and return hassle  Return to in-person buying is just around the corner  Amazon will be ready ..  chain of distribution centers (read stores)...?
It is incredibly smart strategy. They over paid for there whiff on Whole foods and could buy these properties cheap to maybe dollar average down on overall square footage. I just think that micro stores is the wave of the future integrated to be part distribution holding centre part store (for most popular items). It's inevitable. You always have to be trying to get as close to the customer as possible in this day and age of free delivery.
Amazon is expanding in various directions and increasing the stock value.. in october they will open the distribution center of europe at Leibzig airport as well..
that'll make it very bullish lets go!
