Investing.com - Amazon.com is pushing its Fire TV media player business hard, but it's not clear if Walt Disney content will be available on the service. The Wall Street Journal reported Thursday that the two giants can't agree on whether Amazon.com (NASDAQ:AMZN) can sell "a substantial amount" of advertising on Walt Disney (NYSE:DIS) content streamed to HD TVs through Fire TV devices.

  • If there's no agreement, Disney content may not be available from Fire TV. That could include ESPN, ABC network programming, Disney Channel program plus access to Disney's ad-free Disney+ streaming service, set to launch on Nov. 12.

  • Fire TV is the second-largest distributor of streaming content now with a 29% share, behind Roku's 41%. Fire TV offers set-top boxes or the Fire TV stick, which is a HDMI plug-in stick. Users can stream content to their TVs from a variety of apps, including Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) Prime, Netflix (NASDAQ:NFLX), Sling TV and a number of TV networks.

  • Roku (NASDAQ:ROKU), Fire TV and others have become increasingly important hubs for reaching viewers who stream media. Increasingly, the services are playing the role cable companies have played in traditional TV.

  • Disney shares were off 0.55% Thursday. Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) was up 0.4%
