WASHINGTON (Reuters) -Elon Musk said on Friday his rocket company SpaceX cannot indefinitely fund its Starlink internet service in Ukraine, which has helped the country's civilians and military stay online during the war with Russia.

Musk's comment on Twitter came after a media report that SpaceX had asked the Pentagon to pay for the donations of Starlink. The billionaire has been in online fights with Ukrainian officials over a peace plan he put forward which Ukraine says is too generous to Russia.

A senior defense official told reporters on Friday that the U.S. Department of Defense would not confirm that ongoing talks with the company were related to payment, but said the Pentagon was "continuing to talk to SpaceX and other companies about SATCOM capabilities."

The Starlink communications platform has been very "exceptionally effective on the battlefield" allowing Ukrainians to support multiple device connections in the combat environment, a senior U.S. military official said.

The billionaire who runs Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) said Starlink says he spends nearly $20 million a month for maintaining satellite services in Ukraine. He recently said that SpaceX had spent about $80 million to enable and support Starlink there.

"SpaceX is not asking to recoup past expenses, but also cannot fund the existing system indefinitely *and* send several thousand more terminals that have data usage up to 100X greater than typical households. This is unreasonable," Musk wrote on Twitter on Friday.

"We’ve also had to defend against cyberattacks & jamming, which are getting harder," Musk wrote.

CNN reported on Thursday that SpaceX sent a letter to the Pentagon last month saying it could not continue to fund the Starlink service in Ukraine and it may have to stop funding it unless the U.S. military gives the company tens of millions of dollars a month.

SpaceX did not respond to a request for comment.

Musk activated Starlink, satellite broadband service, in Ukraine in late February after internet services were disrupted because of Russia's invasion. SpaceX has since given it thousands of terminals.

Starlink has been a key communications tool for Ukrainian forces in their fight against Russian forces.

On Friday, an advisor to the Ukrainian president said Kyiv will find a solution to keep the Starlink internet service working in Ukraine. And Mykhailo Fedorov, Ukraine's vice prime minister, backed him up on Telegram.

"Starlink terminals were working, are working and will work. Do not worry," he wrote, adding a smiley face emoji at the end.

Ukraine said this week Starlink services helped restore energy and communications infrastructure in critical areas after more than 100 Russian cruise missile attacks

Russia calls its intervention in Ukraine a "special military operation" and says it does not target civilians.

Musk drew widespread criticism from Ukrainians over his peace plan in which he proposed that Ukraine permanently cede the Crimea region to Russia, that new referendums be held under U.N. auspices to determine the fate of Russian-controlled territory, and that Ukraine agree to neutrality.

Ukraine says it will never agree to cede land taken by force, and lawful referendums cannot be held in occupied territory where many people have been killed or driven out.

Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskiy was among those who criticized Musk's proposal.

Ukraine's outgoing ambassador to Germany, Andrij Melnyk, also condemned the plan in tweet that told Musk in profane terms to go away.

Musk, responding to a post referring to the fate of the Starlink service and the ambassador's remark, said:

"We’re just following his recommendation."

Republican U.S. Representative Adam Kingzinger cited Musk's comments on Twitter, writing "if there was ever proof that

@elonmusk is playing games this is it. I’m not sure someone like this can be trusted to any longer do business with our government."

While extremely costly to deploy, satellite technology like Starlink can provide internet for people who live in rural or hard-to-serve areas where fiber optic cables and cell towers do not reach. The technology can also be a critical backstop when natural disasters disrupt communication.

Without Musk having sympathy for Russia here, he is slowly waking up to the reality of Ukraine. I say, better late than never!

He has helped Ukraine repel the invading rapest and murders of civilians. His generosity has a limit. If the government is sending BILLIONS $ to prop up the elected gov of Ukraine then Musks request to cover future costs is reasonable. If we, the US, want putin to expand then cut em off, as his top general has said “ just ***all Ukrainians. They want the kand and grain. Rememinsent of hitlers lavenstraum (sp).

carlos guo Musk has the right to turn off the Starlink system and turn his back on the war…which was started by an enemy of civilization. Yes, he’s entitled to compensation and he’s entitled to his opinion, but his opinion is as morally corrupt as most Americans and not worth the bandwidth it takes to Tweet it out. Ukraine is fighting for its sovereign right to be free from the dictatorial ambitions of Russian leadership…which Musk and every self-respecting member of civil society should support.

Musk has the option of gave part of his money or not. Good for him that helped, but people need to understand that it can not be forever , noone imaging that this war would take this long and us americans will be paying for it. Otherwise us Americans do not have a choice, politicians are deciding for us and expend our money without consulting us. It seems it may take year emptying our pockets as president is not willing to talk and apyply diplomacy . They are taking us to a nuclear war

You are approaching a 2nd world problem with the perspective of 1st world thinking. The difference is existential/ethical before it is political. Musk is not in danger of being torn to pieces by bombs and bullets…at least, not yet. For us in the 1st world this war is an expense that we can afford for now and are free to support or criticize from the comfort and safety of our own homes. For Pres. Zelinsky and all Ukrainians living in the war zone the proposal put forward by Musk is an insult to their intelligence…they know Putin as a ruthless thug and a murdering dictator. To you - and likewise Elon Musk - Putin’s actions are academic.

You - along with the moral cowards who call themselves conservatives - are being played but Putin. If he uses the “bomb” he loses the threat. It’s the threat that gets him what he wants, not the destruction and obvious response. If he uses nukes, even a low yield tactical, he is inviting a direct response by the US and NATO. Putin KNOWS what our intelligence agencies know but you do not, and that’s why he is only threatening and not nuking Ukraine. Putin knows that only 40% of his nuclear force is capable of a successful launch, and he knows that of that 40% less than half will get past NATO defenses. In every scenario a global nuclear was will end Russia permanently.

Tyler Phillis Putin also knows - because he’s not stupid and he has been warned - that it would take less than a week for the US and NATO to destroy all Russian forces in Ukraine and for his entire Black Sea fleet to be wiped out. This is what would happen if he starts down the nuclear path. Russia is a failing culture of brute force and corruption. The reason they are losing to Ukraine is because Ukraine has decided to give up on corruption and is embracing western values. Russia is trying to force modern culture to do the bidding of Bronze Age values. We in the west - those of us who know what is at stake - need to support Ukraine in their fight to embrace the secular western values of representative government, individual rights and trade free of coercion.

In every war in history corporations have never donated services its always been business as usual. Musk has been donating to a foreign country, amazing good for him. My opinion we shouldnt even be involved spending tens of billions and wasting reserves we cannot afford to. He is trying to suggest forms if peace and he's a bad guy
