CHICAGO (Reuters) - New data from Moderna (NASDAQ:MRNA) Inc's large COVID-19 vaccine trial shows that the protection it offers wanes over time, supporting the case for booster doses, the company said in a news release on Wednesday.

"This is only one estimate, but we do believe this means as you look toward the fall and winter, at minimum we expect the estimated impact of waning immunity would be 600,000 additional cases of COVID-19," Moderna President Stephen Hoge said on a conference call with investors.

Hoge did not project how many of the cases would be severe, but said some would require hospitalization.

The data stands in stark contrast with data from several recent studies that suggested Moderna's vaccine protection lasts longer than a similar shot from Pfizer Inc (NYSE:PFE) and German partner BioNTech SE (NASDAQ:BNTX).

Experts said the difference is likely due to Moderna's higher dose of messenger RNA (mRNA) and the slightly longer interval between the first and second shots.

Both vaccines proved to be exceedingly effective at preventing illness in their large Phase III studies.

Wednesday's analysis, however, showed higher rates of infection among people vaccinated roughly 13 months ago compared with those vaccinated roughly eight months ago. The study period was from July-August, when Delta was the predominant strain. It has yet to undergo peer review.

Moderna on Sept. 1 submitted its application to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration seeking authorization for a booster shot.

Hoge said data from its booster studies shows the vaccine could increase neutralizing antibodies to levels even higher than were seen after the second dose.

"We believe this will reduce COVID-19 cases," he said. "We also believe that a third dose of mRNA-1273 has a chance of significantly extending immunity throughout much of next year as we attempt to end the pandemic."

Briefing documents from the FDA's analysis of Pfizer's booster application, released earlier on Wednesday, suggest that a key issue the agency will consider is whether vaccine protection is waning https://www.reuters.com/business/healthcare-pharmaceuticals/pfizer-says-third-covid-19-shot-warranted-fda-document-2021-09-15.

In its analysis, Moderna compared the vaccine's performance in more than 14,000 volunteers vaccinated between July and October of 2020 with some 11,000 volunteers originally in the placebo group who were offered the shot between December 2020 and March 2021 following its U.S. emergency use authorization.

In the two-month period from July-August, researchers identified 88 COVID-19 cases among those who got the two shots more recently, compared with 162 cases among those vaccinated last year. Overall, only 19 cases were considered severe, a key benchmark in assessing waning protection.

Moderna said there was a trend toward a lower rate of severe cases among the more recently vaccinated, although the finding was not statistically significant.

Data from a separate study presented on Wednesday conducted with Kaiser Permanente Southern California health system, meanwhile, shows that Moderna's vaccine continued to perform well against the Delta variant.

Researchers compared data on more than 352,000 people who got two doses of the Moderna vaccine with the same number of unvaccinated individuals and found the Moderna vaccine was 87% effective at preventing a COVID-19 diagnosis, and 96% effective at preventing hospitalization.

Hoge said the vaccine's initial performance is strong, but argued that protection shouldn't be allowed to wane.

"The first six months are great, but you can't count on that being stable out to a year and beyond," he said. (This story corrects year to 2021 from 2022 in 12th paragraph)

We should make people who haven't been vaccinated identify themselves. Maybe an armband. They should also have to sit in special designated places at sporting/entertaining events. They should also have to use separate water fountains and bathrooms. They should also have to sit in the back of the bus. oh wait...

It makes one wonder if Moderna intentionally developed a vaccine they knew would soon require a booster.

Also also note, studies have shown that naturally acquired immunity to COVID-19 is better than vaccine-mediated immunity. I am not suggesting that people do not get vaccinated for this reason, but the fact that they are not even giving the option for people to be tested for natural resistance shows that that is just a political performance and selling vaccines. If it was about preventing the spread of the virus, then vaccinated people would have to be tested like unvaccinated people since they can spread the virus also...and unvaccinated people could be tested to see if they have natural antibodies rather than being forced to take an experimental vaccine.

How is the vaccine any different than immunity from person who had Covid? Israel studies have shown that natural immunty after having recovered is stronger and more lasting than vaccine.

Also note, the reason why they are demonizing ivermectin (despite being FDA approve for non-COVID indications and being one of the most commonly used medications in the world for many years) is that one of the conditions for the FDA emergency authorization for the vaccines is that there cannot be another treatment available. The FDA approval of the Pfizer vaccine was not done like previous FDA approvals, it was done in the least amount of time, did not allow for outside review committed/public data review, and Phase 3 trials will not be complete for years. Two top individuals in the FDA quit their positions as they did not feel that the way vaccine recommendations were being handled was appropriate. Meanwhile leftist sheep obey their government and MSM masters.

If you search online, somebody compiled a list of all reviewed studies on Ivermectin for COVID-19 and around 30 out of 39 of the studies showed statistically significant benefit.

Well one thing you stated is false look up the fda approval for the covid and look at the name. Its not the same vaccine. Lol they aporoved a different vaccine. Also the way you can tell it has nothing to do with current vaccines: the insert says there is no data on pregnat women, breastfeeding women, children under the age of 18. Im sorry havent we given the vaccine to all these ppl? I thought so. So there is data and they refuse to acknowledge the effects or its andifferent vaccine totally.

So you get a shot that supposedly is "protecting other people" and are trying to force others to do the same...even after you find out that it does not prevent you from getting the virus, spreading the virus, wears off after a few weeks, and you are still suppose to go around wearing two masks. Meanwhile Biden takes off his mask to sniff children and yell at people, and pulls it back over his face for photo ops. You are being used. The common flue killed tens of thousand of people every year and no theatrics/hysteria. If you want the vaccine, get it. If you don't, don't. Everything else is politics.

The active caseload in Uttar Pradesh is down to 269, while the percentage of active cases against the total confirmed cases is 0 per cent. The active caseload, which was at a high of 3,10,783 in April, has reduced by over 99 per cent. Fresh Covid-19 cases in the state have remained below 100 for 50 consecutive days. Of the 1,87,638 samples tested in the last 24 hours, 21 tested positive. In the same period, another 17 patients recovered from the infection, adding to the recovery of over 16,86,182 people so far. (These numbers are in lakh so the comma placement is different in the US. 1,87,638 lakh is 187,638)

This state has an estimated population of 241 million people in 2021 and has the highest population in India.  This is almost two-thirds of the United States population in 2021 and yet it is now a COVID-19 free nation.

The 33 districts in Uttar Pradesh, India have now become free from COVID-19 government informed on Friday. The recovery rate has increased up to 98.7% proving the effectiveness of IVERMECTIN as part of the “Uttar Pradesh Covid Control Model.” Uttar Pradesh is the leading state in India to use Ivermectin as early and preventatively in all family contacts. And this state is one of the five lowest COVID cases of all states in India despite having only a low vaccination rate of 5.8% fully vaccinated compared to the USA that has 54% fully vaccinated.

??aren't at risk? sure they are. just at a much lower level. every vaccine will have a risk. since humans are not standardized or normalized, each one will react slightly different and there will be a few that still will get sick, just not as severe

The issue is that it never truly worked. they had these ready to release before last winter. they timed the release to coincide with seasonality for peak perceived effectiveness. The winter in cold weather states will see record covid cases and the same fear mongering headlines, only 'fully vaccinated' will mean those with boosters. Boost the profits dummies!
