India stocks lower at close of trade; Nifty 50 down 0.55%

Investing.com – India stocks were lower after the close on Wednesday, as losses in the Power, Capital Goods and Oil & Gas sectors led shares lower.

At the close in NSE, the Nifty 50 fell 0.55%, while the BSE Sensex 30 index fell 0.44%.

The best performers of the session on the Nifty 50 were Britannia Industries Ltd (NS:BRIT), which rose 2.91% or 106.40 points to trade at 3,757.00 at the close. Meanwhile, Hindustan Unilever Ltd. (NS:HLL) added 1.51% or 38.95 points to end at 2,622.50 and ITC Ltd (NS:ITC) was up 1.47% or 4.95 points to 340.95 in late trade.

The worst performers of the session were Shree Cements Ltd. (NS:SHCM), which fell 5.24% or 1,218.75 points to trade at 22,023.95 at the close. Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd (NS:APSE) declined 3.85% or 37.35 points to end at 932.90 and Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd (NS:PGRD) was down 3.52% or 8.20 points to 224.50.

The top performers on the BSE Sensex 30 were Hindustan Unilever Ltd. (BO:HLL) which rose 1.60% to 2,623.90, ITC Ltd (BO:ITC) which was up 1.59% to settle at 341.05 and Bajaj Finance Ltd (BO:BJFN) which gained 0.76% to close at 7,688.95.

The worst performers were IndusInd Bank Ltd. (BO:INBK) which was down 3.19% to 1,223.90 in late trade, Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd (BO:PGRD) which lost 2.64% to settle at 226.40 and UltraTech Cement Ltd (BO:ULTC) which was down 2.40% to 6,320.70 at the close.

Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the India National Stock Exchange by 1303 to 536 and 49 ended unchanged; on the Bombay Stock Exchange, 2070 fell and 1244 advanced, while 126 ended unchanged.

Shares in ITC Ltd (NS:ITC) rose to 5-year highs; rising 1.47% or 4.95 to 340.95. Shares in ITC Ltd (BO:ITC) rose to 5-year highs; gaining 1.59% or 5.35 to 341.05.

The India VIX, which measures the implied volatility of Nifty 50 options, was up 2.81% to 19.33.

Gold Futures for December delivery was up 0.79% or 13.25 to $1,684.35 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in November rose 2.56% or 2.15 to hit $86.09 a barrel, while the November Brent oil contract rose 2.44% or 2.21 to trade at $92.83 a barrel.

USD/INR was up 0.24% to 79.95, while EUR/INR fell 0.15% to 79.38.

The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.33% at 110.31.
