SHANGHAI (Reuters) - China is preparing to curb some technology exports to the United States, the chief editor of China's Global Times newspaper said on Saturday.

If enacted, the measures suggest Beijing would retaliate over U.S. restrictions imposed on Shenzhen-based Huawei Technologies Co Ltd due to what Washington said were national security issues.

In a tweet, the pro-CCP paper's editor-in-chief Hu Xijin said that China "is building a management mechanism to protect China's key technologies."

"This is a major step to improve its system and also a move to counter U.S. crackdown," he added. "Once taking effect, some technology exports to the U.S. will be subject to the control."

Hu did not cite any named sources in his tweet. The Global times is not an official mouthpiece for the Communist Party though its views are believed to at times represent those of its leaders.

Around the time of Hu's tweet, Chinese state media outlet Xinhua reported that the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) would organize a study to establish a "national technological security management list system."

These announcements come weeks after Washington placed Chinese network equipment maker and smartphone vendor Huawei on a blacklist that effectively bars U.S. companies from supplying it with goods and services.

Soon afterwards, Beijing announced it would release its own list of "unreliable" foreign entities. It also has hinted that it will limit its supply of rare earths to the United States.

Restricting export likely means restriction for entities which harm China's key technological companies & interest, like companies who boycotted Huawei. It has becomes evident now Trump's trade war is escalating into retaliation. Trump's trade war will not solve the problem but actually cause bigger problems. Both sides will lose. Worse US reputation as reliable business partner gone to the drain & may never recover as a result of Trump's reckless actions.
guys china had no choice but to come up with something like this, for further prevention of economic downfall.
I told you guys ... China doesn't mess around. They are a power not to be taken lightly. China plans way ahead and will respond equally to anything Trump does. Plus Trump has very little time left to plan. Shi has a long vision, it is very hard to beat the Chinese at this game.
So does this mean US tech companies like AAPL will sell off next week?
Probably, but then will gain it back once all these American tech companies tell their investors "You know, we don't actually buy/steal that much Chinese IP. It's mostly the other way around."
I wouldn't worry too much with Apple. Apple is pretty much a chinese company and China will protect it. There are many other companies that China can use as chips on the table. Trump can't win this poker game.
Protecting China's key technology? lmao! For a bunch of commies, the Chinese government sure does have great sense of humor! Oh wait... They're serious?....
Yup, I can think of fintech, facial recognition and AI at the moment. And yes, on these - China has surpassed the US already
Look where is China applying this technologies, the iron curtain on their citizens, Chinese public deserve it, the wracked psycology of victims falling in love with the abuser
To say that the citizens deserves it, is rather harsh.. And if you think the US government is not employing the same tactics, then you are sorely mistaken.. I don't have faith in any government in the world - they would not actually be moral.
I laughed so hard that I almost fell off my chair
You can always laugh, it is good for your health. But I am afraid that laugh might turn to a scary face pretty soon. More like laughing, but then something comes become you and scare you and your face turn to chicken and run. Lol
Thank you for dutifully regurgitating the Politburo's talking points here, comrade. Of course, if China had anything that even remotely resembled a free-press, then perhaps people in China might hear the other side of the story....
Oh, they're going to limit exporting the technology that was appropriated from Western countries that were forced to turn it over as a condition of manufacturing there? Neat.
It's for internal use
To save face
slaves should not doubt the superiority of the communist system
