Investing.com – Canada stocks were lower after the close on Friday, as losses in the Consumer Discretionary, Consumer Staples and Telecoms sectors led shares lower.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite fell 0.41%.
The best performers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were MacDonald Dettwiler and Associates Ltd (TO:MDA), which rose 8.42% or 5.35 points to trade at 68.89 at the close. Meanwhile, Mitel Networks Corporation (TO:MNW) added 5.81% or 0.58 points to end at 10.56 and Kirkland Lake Gold Ltd (TO:KL) was up 5.78% or 0.720 points to 13.180 in late trade.
The worst performers of the session were Eldorado Gold Corporation (TO:ELD), which fell 7.59% or 0.23 points to trade at 2.80 at the close. Crescent Point Energy Corp . (TO:CPG) declined 4.35% or 0.45 points to end at 9.90 and Atco Ltd (TO:ACOx) was down 3.94% or 1.96 points to 47.73.
Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the Toronto Stock Exchange by 542 to 535 and 149 ended unchanged.
Shares in Eldorado Gold Corporation (TO:ELD) fell to 5-year lows; down 7.59% or 0.23 to 2.80. Shares in Kirkland Lake Gold Ltd (TO:KL) rose to 5-year highs; rising 5.78% or 0.720 to 13.180.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 7.34% to 12.58.
Gold Futures for August delivery was up 0.77% or 9.74 to $1269.74 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in September rose 1.47% or 0.72 to hit $49.76 a barrel, while the September Brent oil contract rose 2.12% or 1.09 to trade at $52.58 a barrel.
CAD/USD was up 1.00% to 0.8045, while CAD/EUR rose 0.35% to 0.6845.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.66% at 93.15.
