Investing.com – Canada stocks were lower after the close on Thursday, as losses in the Materials, Energy and Healthcare sectors led shares lower.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite fell 0.18%.
The best performers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Methanex Corporation (TO:MX), which rose 9.91% or 6.08 points to trade at 67.44 at the close. Meanwhile, Rogers Communications Inc (TO:RCIb) added 6.58% or 3.46 points to end at 56.04 and Computer Modelling Group Ltd. (TO:CMG) was up 3.26% or 0.30 points to 9.50 in late trade.
The worst performers of the session were Alamos Gold Inc (TO:AGI), which fell 9.74% or 1.07 points to trade at 9.92 at the close. AltaGas Ltd . (TO:ALA) declined 6.42% or 2.14 points to end at 31.18 and Eldorado Gold Corporation (TO:ELD) was down 4.35% or 0.20 points to 4.40.
Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the Toronto Stock Exchange by 634 to 531 and 131 ended unchanged.
Shares in Methanex Corporation (TO:MX) rose to 52-week highs; gaining 9.91% or 6.08 to 67.44.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 5.26% to 10.99 a new 1-month low.
Gold for February delivery was down 0.83% or 9.90 to $1187.90 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in March rose 1.91% or 1.01 to hit $53.76 a barrel, while the March Brent oil contract rose 1.96% or 1.08 to trade at $56.16 a barrel.
CAD/USD was down 0.37% to 0.7623, while CAD/EUR rose 0.34% to 0.7145.
The US Dollar Index was up 0.73% at 100.64.
