Investing.com – Canada stocks were lower after the close on Wednesday, as losses in the Materials, Energy and IT sectors led shares lower.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite fell 1.13% to hit a new 1-month low.
The best performers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Canopy Growth Corp (TO:WEED), which rose 31.17% or 10.020 points to trade at 42.170 at the close. Meanwhile, Aphria Inc (TO:APH) added 20.76% or 1.810 points to end at 10.530 and Aurora Cannabis Inc (TO:ACB) was up 19.66% or 1.050 points to 6.390 in late trade.
The worst performers of the session were HudBay Minerals Inc (TO:HBM), which fell 8.51% or 0.55 points to trade at 5.91 at the close. IAMGold Corporation (TO:IMG) declined 8.17% or 0.490 points to end at 5.510 and MAG Silver Corp (TO:MAG) was down 8.14% or 0.92 points to 10.38.
Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the Toronto Stock Exchange by 706 to 390 and 112 ended unchanged.
Shares in HudBay Minerals Inc (TO:HBM) fell to 52-week lows; down 8.51% or 0.55 to 5.91. Shares in IAMGold Corporation (TO:IMG) fell to 52-week lows; falling 8.17% or 0.490 to 5.510. Shares in MAG Silver Corp (TO:MAG) fell to 52-week lows; losing 8.14% or 0.92 to 10.38.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 11.16% to 14.24 a new 3-months high.
Gold Futures for December delivery was down 1.47% or 17.60 to $1183.10 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in September fell 3.15% or 2.11 to hit $64.93 a barrel, while the October Brent oil contract fell 2.29% or 1.66 to trade at $70.80 a barrel.
CAD/USD was down 0.52% to 0.7618, while CAD/EUR fell 0.58% to 0.6711.
The US Dollar Index Futures was unchanged 0.00% at 96.55.
