Stock market today: S&P 500, Nasdaq clinch records as chip stocks ride AI momentum
Investing.com – Canada stocks were lower after the close on Monday, as losses in the IT, Consumer Staples and Consumer Discretionary sectors led shares lower.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite declined 0.20%.
The best performers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Endeavour Silver Corp. (TSX:EDR), which rose 11.04% or 0.68 points to trade at 6.84 at the close. Meanwhile, Cameco Corp (TSX:CCO) added 10.71% or 8.86 points to end at 91.60 and Brookfield Renewable Energy Partners LP (TSX:BEP_u) was up 7.46% or 2.45 points to 35.31 in late trade.
The worst performers of the session were Lundin Gold Inc (TSX:LUG), which fell 4.80% or 3.45 points to trade at 68.42 at the close. BROOKFIELD ASSET MANAGEMENT LTD (TSX:BAM) declined 4.33% or 3.41 points to end at 75.37 and Shopify Inc (TSX:SHOP) was down 3.30% or 5.03 points to 147.55.
Rising stocks outnumbered declining ones on the Toronto Stock Exchange by 537 to 340 and 102 ended unchanged.
Shares in Cameco Corp (TSX:CCO) rose to all time highs; gaining 10.71% or 8.86 to 91.60.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 4.61% to 9.94 a new 3-months low.
Gold Futures for August delivery was up 0.01% or 0.40 to $3,347.00 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in July rose 1.24% or 0.80 to hit $65.38 a barrel, while the August Brent oil contract rose 0.95% or 0.63 to trade at $67.10 a barrel.
CAD/USD was unchanged 0.02% to 0.73, while CAD/EUR unchanged 0.24% to 0.64.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.17% at 98.97.
