Investing.com – Canada stocks were lower after the close on Monday, as losses in the Energy, Consumer Staples and Industrials sectors led shares lower.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite lost 0.13%.
The best performers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Pretium Resources Inc. (TO:PVG), which rose 13.60% or 1.94 points to trade at 16.20 at the close. Meanwhile, Novagold Resources Inc . (TO:NG) added 9.89% or 0.70 points to end at 7.78 and Torex Gold Resources Inc (TO:TXG) was up 9.65% or 2.900 points to 32.940 in late trade.
The worst performers of the session were Birchcliff Energy Ltd . (TO:BIR), which fell 6.18% or 0.49 points to trade at 7.44 at the close. Crew Energy Inc (TO:CR) declined 5.81% or 0.33 points to end at 5.35 and Bonavista Energy Corp (TO:BNP) was down 5.65% or 0.280 points to 4.680.
Rising stocks outnumbered declining ones on the Toronto Stock Exchange by 608 to 561 and 117 ended unchanged.
Shares in Pretium Resources Inc. (TO:PVG) rose to 3-years highs; gaining 13.60% or 1.94 to 16.20.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 6.47% to 12.34.
Gold Futures for April delivery was up 1.31% or 16.05 to $1236.85 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in March fell 1.34% or 0.72 to hit $53.11 a barrel, while the April Brent oil contract fell 1.71% or 0.97 to trade at $55.84 a barrel.
CAD/USD was down 0.42% to 0.7646, while CAD/EUR fell 0.10% to 0.7111.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.12% at 99.81.
