Investing.com – Canada stocks were higher after the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Materials, Healthcare and Financials sectors led shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite rose 0.76%.
The best performers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Pretium Resources Inc. (TO:PVG), which rose 7.91% or 0.88 points to trade at 12.00 at the close. Meanwhile, Asanko Gold Inc (TO:AKG) added 7.52% or 0.310 points to end at 4.430 and Ivanhoe Mines Ltd. (TO:IVN) was up 7.09% or 0.180 points to 2.720 in late trade.
The worst performers of the session were Advantage Oil & Gas Ltd. (TO:AAV), which fell 4.17% or 0.380 points to trade at 8.740 at the close. Birchcliff Energy Ltd . (TO:BIR) declined 3.74% or 0.35 points to end at 9.02 and BRP Inc. (TO:DOO) was down 2.79% or 0.79 points to 27.56.
Rising stocks outnumbered declining ones on the Toronto Stock Exchange by 737 to 427 and 126 ended unchanged.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 1.25% to 12.94 a new 1-month high.
Gold for February delivery was up 0.69% or 7.95 to $1159.65 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in February fell 2.31% or 1.24 to hit $52.48 a barrel, while the March Brent oil contract fell 2.04% or 1.16 to trade at $55.66 a barrel.
CAD/USD was up 0.03% to 0.7443, while CAD/EUR rose 0.70% to 0.7152.
The US Dollar Index was up 0.87% at 103.26.
