Investing.com – Canada stocks were higher after the close on Monday, as gains in the Mining, Energy and Materials sectors led shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite rose 0.73% to hit a new 52-week high.
The best performers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Baytex Energy Corp (TO:BTE), which rose 7.28% or 0.45 points to trade at 6.63 at the close. Meanwhile, HudBay Minerals Inc. (TO:HBM) added 5.60% or 0.33 points to end at 6.22 and Enerflex Ltd . (TO:EFX) was up 5.54% or 0.70 points to 13.34 in late trade.
The worst performers of the session were Kinaxis Inc (TO:KXS), which fell 3.03% or 1.87 points to trade at 59.94 at the close. Norbord Inc (TO:OSB) declined 2.63% or 0.88 points to end at 32.55 and Stantec Inc. (TO:STN) was down 2.60% or 0.78 points to 29.17.
Rising stocks outnumbered declining ones on the Toronto Stock Exchange by 797 to 371 and 130 ended unchanged.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 7.29% to 12.59.
Gold for December delivery was down 0.25% or 3.35 to $1341.05 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in September rose 2.58% or 1.08 to hit $42.88 a barrel, while the October Brent oil contract rose 2.12% or 0.94 to trade at $45.21 a barrel.
CAD/USD was up 0.08% to 0.7597, while CAD/EUR rose 0.15% to 0.6855.
The US Dollar Index was up 0.15% at 96.33.
