Investing.com – Canada stocks were higher after the close on Friday, as gains in the Materials, Energy and Consumer Discretionary sectors led shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite gained 0.72% to hit a new all time high.
The best performers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Sierra Wireless Inc . (TO:SW), which rose 31.04% or 7.59 points to trade at 32.04 at the close. Meanwhile, HudBay Minerals Inc. (TO:HBM) added 7.83% or 0.84 points to end at 11.57 and Enerplus Corporation (TO:ERF) was up 6.39% or 0.74 points to 12.32 in late trade.
The worst performers of the session were Great Canadian Gaming Corporation (TO:GC), which fell 6.46% or 1.67 points to trade at 24.20 at the close. DH Corp (TO:DH) declined 4.30% or 1.05 points to end at 23.35 and Advantage Oil & Gas Ltd. (TO:AAV) was down 2.75% or 0.240 points to 8.490.
Rising stocks outnumbered declining ones on the Toronto Stock Exchange by 755 to 421 and 116 ended unchanged.
Shares in Sierra Wireless Inc. (TO:SW) rose to 52-week highs; gaining 31.04% or 7.59 to 32.04. Shares in HudBay Minerals Inc. (TO:HBM) rose to 52-week highs; up 7.83% or 0.84 to 11.57.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 4.71% to 11.94.
Gold Futures for April delivery was down 0.14% or 1.75 to $1235.05 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in March rose 1.49% or 0.79 to hit $53.79 a barrel, while the April Brent oil contract rose 1.80% or 1.00 to trade at $56.63 a barrel.
CAD/USD was up 0.35% to 0.7639, while CAD/EUR rose 0.60% to 0.7182.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.12% at 100.78.
