Asia stocks tread water as tariff concerns persist; Tech eyes TSMC earnings
Investing.com – Canada stocks were higher after the close on Thursday, as gains in the Telecoms, Healthcare and Consumer Staples sectors led shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite gained 0.35% to hit a new all time high.
The best performers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were TransAlta Corp (TSX:TA), which rose 8.46% or 1.21 points to trade at 15.51 at the close. Meanwhile, G Mining Ventures Corp (TSX:GMIN) added 8.38% or 1.54 points to end at 19.92 and Lundin Gold Inc (TSX:LUG) was up 6.41% or 4.40 points to 72.99 in late trade.
The worst performers of the session were Ivanhoe Mines Ltd. (TSX:IVN), which fell 7.24% or 0.78 points to trade at 9.99 at the close. Equinox Gold Corp (TSX:EQX) declined 5.70% or 0.54 points to end at 8.93 and Lightspeed Commerce Inc (TSX:LSPD) was down 4.97% or 0.82 points to 15.67.
Rising stocks outnumbered declining ones on the Toronto Stock Exchange by 492 to 384 and 108 ended unchanged.
Shares in Ivanhoe Mines Ltd. (TSX:IVN) fell to 52-week lows; losing 7.24% or 0.78 to 9.99. Shares in Lundin Gold Inc (TSX:LUG) rose to 5-year highs; gaining 6.41% or 4.40 to 72.99.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 1.21% to 10.63.
Gold Futures for August delivery was up 1.89% or 63.25 to $3,406.95 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in July rose 0.53% or 0.36 to hit $68.51 a barrel, while the August Brent oil contract rose 0.19% or 0.13 to trade at $69.90 a barrel.
CAD/USD was unchanged 0.51% to 0.74, while CAD/EUR unchanged 0.30% to 0.63.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.72% at 97.89.
