(Reuters) - Britain must defend its companies against overseas takeovers in the aftermath of the crisis caused by the coronavirus outbreak, a senior British lawmaker said, adding that China's state-owned companies have drawn on state banks to outbid rivals.

"Increasingly, China's state-owned enterprises have been able to draw on state banks to outbid rivals in Europe and America", Tom Tugendhat, chair of the Foreign Affairs Select Committee and a Conservative Party lawmaker, wrote in the Financial Times newspaper https://on.ft.com/2Xokfv1.

"In a downturn, the difference between state-backed credit and the buying power of normal commercial investors will become starker, further strengthening the hand of state-owned enterprises with a voracious appetite to buy rather than build."

Tugendhat wrote that while Britain has prided itself on being an open economy with few restrictions on foreign ownership for decades, the basis for that model has been changed by the "rise in state capitalism with deep pockets".

Last month, Tugendhat said China was trying to exploit the global crisis triggered by the novel coronavirus outbreak by wresting control of companies such as Imagination Technologies and changing the way the internet works.

The 1929 crisis brought on PROTECTIONISM. We see the repeat occurrence and most likely start of another great depression. Thanks to TRUMP the bully we have an excuse to go after the Big Guy on the block.  I can't believe we can see another 4 years of Trump so I guess i root for any nation that can dethrone him. History will not be kind to our generation and GOP for endorsing such a corrupt immoral unethical lunatic that is ***bent on destroying the world. if you think this is hyperbole think again.  Back to the wall, he will do anything and everything to win next election.
OMG must the Juden destroy everything?
Britain used to own the world. Now they're just an island with former colonies that are nothing more than friends. Pretty sad. Stand up again and be great again
How? Used to means nothing now, look at Macedon, Roman empires, all gone with wind, only in statues for peoples to ponder on their meanings for today.
A little late for that!
The Chinese are quite evil. Finally the world may wake up to this godless menace?
Same stale tricks from evil crusades. Can you evils develop normal culture or mentality, really despicable lowlives.
'..voracious appetite to buy rather than build..' -- In China's case, this tendency of acquisition has been leaning on stealing rather than build. In this context here it's about using state-backed funds and steal equity away from balanced competition. -- While It's better to keep the Chinese out and build one's own system than to have to fight with a cancerous and weakening core Governments just want to kick the can down the road and end up accepting money from China and then the citizens have to endure the never-ending bickering we hear from a pro-China movement and watch how the Confucius institute is working hard at subverting our public image. It's a very subtle shift that is happening and certainly, the leaders of a country are aware that their population has more money that came from China but there is this never-ending infiltration of ideology by China and monitoring of its citizens and their citizens like Jason Zou making propaganda that seems out of place per what is going on
Unfortunately it misses the point. The UK is capital poor compared to the the large surplus countries. Inward investment has been the back bone of UK growth for 20+ years and the pandemic is only going to add to that. So one cannot just single out China. Please note one the last sales of the "crown jewels" was ARM to a Japanese company. Moreover, one cannot regress to petty nationalism as we are seeing in the US. The UK has to more focused more.1 Balance the physical current account. Identify the areas where the largest imbalances occur and build domestic supply to meet the demand.  2) Realignment of Britain's place in the world a) end of special relationship b) give up the seat on the UN council c) give up all overseas territories d) Reduce involvement  with Europe to a minimum e) and this is the most important a recognition that fundamentally that the UK has very little to offer the world. Just for good orders sake I'm a UK and US citizen
Now the British are “racists” against China...lol...no one will say that though because the british are “tolerant” and “progressive” lmao what a joke people have become
Tolerant and progressive? Get rid of disgusting English royalty first, then look at Falklands War. Everything is well calculated for loss and gain, thats it, no one in this world trusts Britains, slippery like a snake.
Sure, forget the free market nonesense, to be heavy-handedly dealt with government, if necessary, authoritarianly.
A Chicom complaining about authoritarian governments.  lol
Cmon, your English was taught by your physical exercise teacher, wasnt it? I commend autharitarian to English government to deal with the concern that their critical businesses are being aquired by Chinese companies. Obviously ChiCom is much smarter than you guys, who adamantly refuse to adapt and progress, sigh deeply. Is Liddle Great Britain with longer and richer history than China? If China can adopt some ideas of communism, why cant Liddle Great Britain? Why so stubborn like a decaying stub?
Tom Tugendhat, a Conservative Party lawmaker, shares my inkling. China has been having a ball snapping up outside of China infrastructure companies using state bank backing, and altogether ANTI-BIZ style of doing biz, or may I say a very fo ul way of doing biz. China must be stopped at all cost since China's overreach has been well noted over history. It's this ********type principle they use to infiltrate non-Chinese structures with the goal of weakening those systems. China is like a can cer that uses sugar (money) to overpower its opponents with a long-term goal to rule the world. In the end we (the still free world) are going to ask ourselves 'HOW DID THIS WEAKNESS HAPPEN?' It's like all can cers: we must resist and that resistance is painful and requires self-discipline.
