Investing.com – Australia stocks were lower after the close on Wednesday, as losses in the Metals & Mining, Resources and Materials sectors led shares lower.
At the close in Australia, the S&P/ASX 200 fell 2.07% to hit a new 52-week low.
The best performers of the session on the S&P/ASX 200 were Nufarm Ltd (ASX:NUF), which rose 9.34% or 0.660 points to trade at 7.730 at the close. Meanwhile, TPG Telecom Ltd (ASX:TPM) added 4.80% or 0.480 points to end at 10.480 and Transpacific Industries Group Ltd (ASX:TPI) was up 4.76% or 0.030 points to 0.660 in late trade.
The worst performers of the session were Liquefied Natural Gas Ltd (ASX:LNG), which fell 8.05% or 0.130 points to trade at 1.485 at the close. Independence Group NL (ASX:IGO) declined 7.37% or 0.230 points to end at 2.890 and OZ Minerals Ltd (ASX:OZL) was down 6.52% or 0.230 points to 3.300.
Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the Australia Stock Exchange by 601 to 328 and 161 ended unchanged.

The S&P/ASX 200 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/ASX 200 options, was up 9.45% to 26.599.
Gold for December delivery was up 0.12% or 1.40 to $1126.20 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in November rose 0.38% or 0.17 to hit $46.53 a barrel, while the November Brent oil contract rose 0.13% or 0.07 to trade at $49.15 a barrel.
AUD/USD was down 0.60% to 0.7048, while AUD/JPY fell 0.66% to 84.61.
The US Dollar Index was down 0.07% at 96.43.
