Investing.com – Australia stocks were lower after the close on Monday, as losses in the Energy, Consumer Discretionary and Resources sectors led shares lower.

At the close in Sydney, the S&P/ASX 200 lost 2.19%.

The best performers of the session on the S&P/ASX 200 were Healius Ltd (ASX:HLS), which rose 18.97% or 0.480 points to trade at 3.010 at the close. Meanwhile, Monadelphous Group Ltd (ASX:MND) added 3.61% or 0.39 points to end at 11.20 and Clinuvel Pharmaceuticals Ltd (ASX:CUV) was up 3.33% or 0.75 points to 23.25 in late trade.

The worst performers of the session were Pilbara Minerals Ltd (ASX:PLS), which fell 14.52% or 0.045 points to trade at 0.265 at the close. Corporate Travel Managment Ltd (ASX:CTD) declined 10.31% or 1.31 points to end at 11.40 and Orocobre Ltd (ASX:ORE) was down 8.61% or 0.21 points to 2.23.

Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the Sydney Stock Exchange by 909 to 334 and 319 ended unchanged.

The S&P/ASX 200 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/ASX 200 options, was down 11.02% to 23.758.

Gold Futures for August delivery was down 0.72% or 12.50 to $1724.80 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in July fell 4.99% or 1.81 to hit $34.45 a barrel, while the August Brent oil contract fell 3.59% or 1.39 to trade at $37.34 a barrel.

AUD/USD was down 1.14% to 0.6784, while AUD/JPY fell 0.78% to 72.73.

The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.00% at 97.332.
