(Reuters) - Wednesday night's matchup between Vice President Mike Pence and Democratic challenger Senator Kamala Harris unfolded largely free of the chaos that marred last week's debate between President Donald Trump and former Vice President Joe Biden.

Here are a few standout moments from the debate:

PACKING THE COURT?

Frustrated that Trump and the Republican-controlled Senate may soon cement a 6-3 conservative majority on the Supreme Court, some on the left have called on Biden to expand the nine-member court to 11 or 13 seats. Harris declined to say whether she supported that idea.

Her silence was telling, Pence said. "The straight answer is they are going to pack the Supreme Court if they somehow win this election," he said.

POLICY TO THE FORE

The relatively sedate atmosphere allowed stark policy differences to come to the fore.

On global warming, for example, Pence declined to say that it is caused by human activity - the overwhelming scientific consensus - and said Biden's proposed fixes would be too expensive.

He also inaccurately said that Biden would ban hydraulic fracturing. Biden, in fact, has said repeatedly he would not pursue a fracking ban, although he would oppose new permits for drilling on federal land. It is a key issue in electoral backgrounds like western Pennsylvania and eastern Ohio, where the technique has led to a boom in energy production over the past decade.

A FLY IN THE OINTMENT

A stray housefly sat for several minutes on Pence's white hair, hanging on as he shook his head and parried with Harris over race and criminal justice -- providing comic fodder for late-night hosts and Twitter users alike. Biden's campaign sold flyswatters to capitalize on the buzz.

COLORING INSIDE THE LINES

Following last week's insult-laden debate between Biden and Trump, both candidates took a relatively low-key approach, greeting each other respectfully and rarely raising their voices.

Things eventually heated up, but only to a simmer, not a boil. When Pence interrupted, Harris was able to silence him with a simple phrase: "Mr. Vice President, I'm speaking."

Pence closed with a paean to civil discourse.

"In America we can disagree. We can debate vigorously as Senator Harris and I have on this stage tonight. But when the debate is over, we come together as Americans," he said.

SPEAK NOT OF THE AGED

Biden, 77, would be the oldest president in U.S. history if he were to win the election. Trump, 74, spent the weekend at a military hospital outside Washington after contracting COVID-19.

Both candidates ducked questions about the health of their elderly running mates.

When asked whether there was a firm plan of succession in place, Pence, 61, used his time to talk about vaccines, while Harris, 55, talked up her biography as a child of immigrants who went on to serve as California attorney general.

Likewise, neither answered directly when asked why their older running mates had not released detailed health information. Pence thanked those who had wished for Trump's recovery, while Harris criticized Trump for not releasing his tax returns.

A DISPUTED ELECTION?

Both candidates also danced around what would happen in the event of a disputed election -- a scenario prompted by Trump's repeated statements that he might not accept the outcome if he does not win.

Harris urged supporters to vote, rather than playing up the possibility of legal wrangling or violence at polling places. "If we use our voice and use our vote we will win," she said.

Pence did not promise that Trump would leave office if he lost. Instead, he accused Democrats of denying the legitimacy of Trump's 2016 victory through investigations and impeachment.

wow...give your head a shake ..your freedoms in the US are superficial at best ..voter suppression has Always been a Deal by a ruling party in the us going back to the 1770s.,..this time around your leader wants his own little kingdom ...so their is no painting it another color your democracy is on the line .. ,, you guys have been losing your freedoms for years now ..
KH deferred to dignity and democracy several times, revealing the fundamentals of her party's platform.  However, those ideals are not the ones that made America great.  Dignity is for individuals to establish for themselves, albeit freedom is a perquisite for dignity to exist. KH thinks if the government can give it's citizens food stamps so that they don't have to beg for food that the government has restored dignity to the beggar. Can we have some intelligence in leadership? Dignity comes from self-sufficiency, never from a handout. How uneducated KH is! She referenced fighting for democracy. We fight for freedom, not democracy! Democracy is a process that enables majority rule. That's what I mean about revealing the fundamentals of her party. Unashamedly she advocates for her party's power to provide you with dignity and robs you of your chance to provide it for yourself. How harmful that is to any people, and she's so naive she doesn't even know it. (Part One)
We can forgive KH. There's so many like her that don't get it... So many in possession of an education full of falsehoods. There is truth, but she has it not. I will be voting for the candidates that advocate fighting for freedom, not fighting for democracy. Democracy is important, but freedom is more fundamental, and for a person in her position I think it is unacceptable that she would speak of fighting for democracy, before speaking of fighting for freedom. The reason is her party's platform is for control over people. KH wants democracy to empower her and her party so that they can take your freedom away and give you dignity. (Part Two)
The Affordable Care Act is just a case in point. Today I received a letter from an insurance company I've had a policy with, requesting information required by the IRS, where if I did not provide that information the IRS would impose a $50 dollar fine. Infringement on our freedom has come this far! Can you imagine that? The government involved in the health care industry to the extent the IRS can fine you for not providing information to an insurance company? I'm so glad the Trump administration is going to repeal ACA and restore our freedom. The presiding administration has repealed countless regulations and taxes. I support the President and MP in their efforts to return America to the principals upon which it was founded. Those principals are those that preserve the domestic freedom of the US citizens so that they can see to their own dignity, and not have to be forced to accept the government's idea of what they think dignity is for each of us. (Part Three)
It is about freedom. KH and her party are about the government knowing what is best for you better than you do. Vote democrat through the democracy we have and empower the government to solve all of our problems, or vote to be free to solve your problems for yourself. The former has been tried by Marx, and Lenin, and so many others - all winding up disastrously, yet here we are with democrats advocating the same thing that has already been shown at least a hundred times by other nation's governments to fail. That's what I mean when I ask: can we have some intelligent leadership in our public offices, please? It is just plain ignorant to think "fighting for democracy" and providing "dignity" are fitting words for a VP candidate to fall back on. Give me the incumbent please, thank you. (Part Four - Final)
Pence was definately the winner of this debate by far
The fly was the winner. It owned Pence's snowy hair.
Pence deflected so hard tonight. Couldn't get a straight answer out of the guy.
Sorry but you bias is on display. Pence mopped the floor with Harris.
Where in the world is Thom Miller? He was supposed to explain to all of us, why Biden/Harris would be a good fit? Please Thom, we are all anxiously waiting to hear your brilliance on the matter.
because they aint trump pence? standards are so low, you simply jave to be not trump pence to beat trump pence
I guess it was past Thom Millers bedtime. Sweet dreams, little guy!
I guess Thom Miller disappeared on us? Though I did enjoy his comments. Hopefully, Reuters won’t fire him for his lack of intelligence. Of all the people on this site, no one has written more nonsensical drivel then Thom Miller!
Wrong. Eddie Glass takes the cake by far, followed by Maga King at a close second. (Case in point, they've both had at least one account banned on here).
Let's not forget. Kamala would be president if Joe can't make it for 4 years. This debate was more important than a typical VP debate. She's not very presidential if you ask me.
Anyone is better than Trump. ANYONE!
What happened to Thom Miller and all of his brilliance. Come on Thom, we are waiting.
Why won’t Thom Miller actually speak on substance? Will he actually provide voters meaningful insight, to help them choose who to vote for. Can he actually contribute something meaningful on this site? Or will he continue to speak as though he were a child?
Senator Harris was quietly brilliant tonight. At every step of the way, she forced Kissy Kissy Mike to Kissy Kissy Trump. She made America understand that he rubber stamps absolute everything Trump stands for, including lies, disrespect for the US military, tax evasion, 210,000 Americans sent to their graves, and white supremacy. Great job, Senator! Even the fly was attracted to the pile of **** on the stage.
Good to hear. I expected that of her. America needs levelheaded politicians like her.
Read Michael’s below comment. He actually thinks the past tense of “pay” is “payed.” Just one more example of uneducated Trumpers and folks who “paid” intelligent kids to take the SATs for them. LOL! Hey, Mike, if I spotted you the C and the T would you be able to spell CAT?
come on Thom. We are waiting?
OK, Michael, you drive a hard bargain. You’re even more uneducated than I figured. Here’s the A to go with the C and the T.
what academic credentials do you hold Thom?
Fox News has just reported that the bug on Pence’s head was God’s way of saying horse manure attracts flies.
Great job by Pence. Dont forget, it was Harris who was sending minorities to prison by the dozens. This is just a fact. At the same time I don’t believe the government has the right to tell someone what to do with their body. But what is most troubling is, what is Biden and Harris’ plan. They have yet to explain anything. They will never explain what they will do for the American people. I truly don’t understand how they expect people to vote for them when they don’t explain what they will do. This is just like 2016. I’m neither a Biden or Trump supporter. Though if I were a Democrat it would be tough for me to vote for Biden, given the party no longer embraces the core Democrat values. Many Democrats who don’t like President Trump will vote for him because their party has clearly left the old base behind. Career politicians don’t allow for change. Biden is a career politician. Nothing changed under Obama, so how can one believe it will under a 78 year old white guy?
Look, Michael is a racist against white men. How about obese orange ones?
you have clearly lost it bud! I will pray for you!
You mean the way Trump prays for people? No thanks! By the way, Pence looked so tight tonight, he was attracting bar flies!
Pence 2024!
Wrong oh political pundit. Reference was to her major gaff showing lack human empathy in reference to covid deaths.
Eddie...as one who has spent many months on a kibbutz, you know all too well that flies are attracted to manure, and tonight was no exception.
you're a disgrace to jews
Totally agree with Bill down below.... Senator Harris is polished, educated, experienced and trustworthy. Kissy Kissy Mike is a liar and a sneak. Oh, and he didn’t answer one question asked of him and hogged the floor until he was upstaged by the fly.
lol Kamala is getting wrecked
Well it’s true....just watched Kissy Kissy Mike on the debate. **** really does attract flies.
Neither party has clean hands, but we will all pay for the mistakes of our government. It’s a shame that it’s such a soap opera in Washington. I think both side of the coin are leadings us into chaos with all of their propaganda. Under obamas rein propaganda was legalized. That’s just if you ever wondered why it’s so dramatic all the time in Washington. I tends to not believe and trust more in conspiracies. They are based in more truth than politicians these days😇
Polished, educated, experienced and trustworthy. Self defined "that little girl" in my opinion fails concerning when she said "200,00 bodies". Vice President referred loss of "every person" is a tragedy.
It’s all a big game people. Literally does not matter.
