WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday said the partial shutdown of the federal government was going to last until his demand for funds to build a wall on the U.S.-Mexico border is met.

The U.S. government partially shut down on Saturday, and there is not yet any sign of tangible efforts to reopen agencies closed by a political impasse over Trump's demand for border wall funds.

"I can't tell you when the government is going to reopen," Trump said, speaking after a Christmas Day video conference with U.S. troops serving abroad. "I can tell you it's not going to reopen until we have a wall, a fence, whatever they'd like to call it. I'll call it whatever they want, but it's all the same thing. It's a barrier from people pouring into the country, from drugs."

He added: "If you don't have that (the wall), then we're just not opening."

Funding for about a quarter of federal programs - including the departments of Homeland Security, Justice and Agriculture - expired at midnight on Friday. Without a deal to break the impasse, the shutdown is likely to stretch into the new year.

Building the wall was one of Trump's most frequently repeated campaign promises, but Democrats are vehemently opposed to it.

The way I see it, Trump got elected on tough immigration and the wall. Clearly the general public wants the border at least repaired if not a new wall built. Going against the wall is a dangerous game they're playing. They will not be reelected.

He got elected by the Electoral College and not a majority of the voters. Also, his campaign promise was that Mexico would pay for the wall. Not the US taxpayers. Democrats are not for "open borders and crime" like Trump loves to falsely claim. They are just against spending tax payers' money on a hugely expensive wall that won't be very effective.

People need to get their facts straight, since 2014, those overstaying their visas and joining the illegal immigrants pool were 66% of the total illegal immigrants.  So vetting visa holders is more effective and a lot cheaper than wasting billions on a wall. Yes some illegals from the southern border have committed crimes, but their rates are 40% lower than native born citizens.  So the notion that illegal immigrants are responsible for the majority of crimes is false. Something needs to be done to address illegal immigration that is both beneficial to the illegals and to the USA.  The 1987 Amnesty program not only legalized illegal immigrants, but increased the tax payer base for the country and its effects was evident under later part of Bush and Clinton's administrations.

China has approved $8bn to build a high-speed train network. Meanwhile, America wants similar funding to build a wall! No further comment. :)
