Investing.com - U.S. President Donald Trump lashed out on Twitter against the appointment of a special counsel to investigate alleged Russian interference in November’s presidential election on Thursday.

“With all of the illegal acts that took place in the Clinton campaign & Obama administration, there was never a special [counsel] appointed!” Trump tweeted. He misspelled counsel as “councel” in the tweet.

He did not provide any evidence for the alleged illegal activity.

In a second tweet, Trump said “This is the single greatest witch hunt of a politician in American history!”

On Wednesday the Justice Department appointed former FBI director Robert Mueller as special counsel to probe Russia's role in the presidential election, as well as possible collusion by Trump’s campaign team.

Mueller will have sweeping powers and the authority to prosecute any crimes he uncovers.

The appointment of a special counsel came after former FBI director James Comey was abruptly dismissed last week and amid revelations that he was asked by the president to drop the probe into former national security adviser Michael Flynn’s ties with Russia.

Mueller was appointed by deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who has faced criticism as the author of a memo that preceded Comey's firing.

Rosenstein said the appointment was "necessary in order for the American people to have full confidence in the outcome."
