Keve Aluma scored a career-high 23 points to lift Virginia Tech to an upset of No. 3 Villanova 81-73 in overtime in the Basketball Hall of Fame Tip-Off on Saturday in Uncasville, Conn.
Nahiem Alleyne added 20 for the Hokies, who improved to 2-0. Tyrece Radford contributed 13 rebounds, and Justyn Mutts scored 12 points.
Collin Gillespie scored 25 points, Caleb Daniels added 17 and Jeremiah Robinson-Earl had 14 points and nine rebounds for the Wildcats, who fell to 2-1.
Aluma converted a three-point play with 1.3 seconds left in regulation to put the Hokies up 64-62, and then Villanova's Justin Moore drew a foul and tied the game at 64 with two free throws to force overtime.
No. 2 Baylor 112, Louisiana 82
MaCio Teague scored 21 points and grabbed seven rebounds, Davion Mitchell finished with 18 points and six assists, and the Bears cruised to the victory over the Ragin' Cajuns at Las Vegas.
The contest, which was only scheduled on Friday, was the season opener for both teams.
LJ Cryer and Jared Butler added 17 points apiece for Baylor (1-0). Adam Flagler was the fifth and final Bears player to score in double digits, putting up 12 points on 5-for-9 shooting. Cedric Russell scored 26 points on 10-for-17 shooting to lead Louisiana (0-1).
Both teams shot better than 50 percent, but Baylor dominated in reboounding, 41-29.
No. 9 Duke 81, Coppin State 71
D.J. Steward and Jalen Johnson turned in strong performances in their debuts as the Blue Devils began the season with a victory against the visiting Eagles in Durham, N.C.
Steward, a freshman guard, came off the bench to score 24 points on 10-for-18 shooting from the field for Duke (1-0). Johnson, the only freshman in Duke's starting lineup, poured in 19 points to go with 19 rebounds while making all eight of his field-goal attempts. Johnson also added five assists and four blocked shots.
Anthony Tarke and DeJuan Clayton, who made all 10 of his free throws, paced Coppin State (0-1) with 22 points apiece. Koby Thomas added 11 points and Kenan Sarvan had 10 points and eight rebounds.
No. 13 Michigan State 80, Notre Dame 70
Aaron Henry filled the stat sheet with 14 points, eight rebounds, three assists and four blocks, and the Spartans had a 26-0 run spanning the first and second halves to overwhelm the Fighting Irish at East Lansing, Mich.
Rocket Watts supplied 13 points and six assists, and Joey Hauser contributed 10 points, 16 rebounds and four assists for Michigan State. Gabe Brown added nine points and made five steals, while Joshua Langford chipped in eight points.
The Spartans (2-0) led by as many as 28 points and were up double digits throughout the second half. Prentiss Hubb paced Notre Dame (0-1) with 23 points. Cormac Ryan had 13 points, while Nate Laszewski and Dane Goodwin added 12 points apiece.
