MLB notebook: Yankees' Boone gets 1-game suspension

New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone was suspended one game and fined an undisclosed amount for his rant at home plate umpire Brennan Miller.

Major League Baseball Chief Baseball Officer Joe Torre announced the discipline Friday for "inappropriate actions, including contact with the home plate umpire." Boone missed Friday night's home game against the Colorado Rockies.

Boone was ejected in the second inning Thursday for his tirade against Miller. Players Brett Gardner and DJ LeMahieu were upset with Miller's strike calls and Boone went out to argue and the field microphone picked up his words.

He told Miller "my guys are (bleeping) savages in that box and you're having a piece of (bleep) start to this game. I feel bad for ya but (bleeping) get better."

--Los Angeles Angels right-handed starting pitcher Matt Harvey, who experienced a setback last month with an upper back strain, was designated for assignment.

Harvey missed seven weeks because of the injury, then returned to make two starts over the past week. He beat the Seattle Mariners on July 13 with 5 1/3 innings of one-run ball, but then he gave up six runs on seven hits and five walks in six innings in a 6-2 loss to the Houston Astros on Thursday.

Harvey compiled a 3-5 record with a 7.09 ERA, 39 strikeouts and 29 walks in 12 starts over 59 2/3 innings in 12 starts this season. He was signed to a one-year, $11 million contract in December after the Cincinnati Reds granted him free agency.

--The Chicago White Sox returned Adam Engel to the major league roster after the outfielder had a productive run at Triple-A Charlotte.

Engel will take the roster spot of outfielder Charlie Tilson, who was optioned to Charlotte following Thursday's game at Kansas City.

Engel, 27, was optioned to Triple-A on May 5, and has since batted .270 with 13 doubles, four triples and nine home runs at Charlotte. Tilson, 26, was batting .229 with one home run and 12 RBIs in 54 games for the White Sox, who open a three-game road series against the Tampa Bay Rays on Friday.

--Free agent left-hander Drew Smyly will sign with the Philadelphia Phillies and likely join the starting rotation, according to multiple reports.

Smyly opted out of his minor league contract with the Milwaukee Brewers on Thursday.

Smyly, 30, pitched in 13 games (9 starts) with the Texas Rangers this season, going 1-5 with an 8.42 ERA.
