(Reuters) - Los Angeles Angels center fielder Mike Trout has been sidelined indefinitely after suffering a torn ligament in his left thumb, General Manager Billy Eppler said on Monday.
A two-time American League MVP, Trout was injured on Sunday when he slid into second base head first on a steal attempt.
An MRI on Monday revealed the extent of the damage and the Angels put the 25-year-old onto the disabled list for the first time in his career.
“Surgery is one of the options. The doctor will sit down tonight with Mike and go over all of the options available,” Eppler said.
“Surgery has a very high success rate. He conceivably could be back in five to eight weeks, but that's getting way ahead of ourselves. He could rehab the tear and try to play without surgery, but with a tear, there's always the risk of making things worse.”
Trout is among the league leaders in batting average (.337), home runs (16) and RBIs (36) this season.
The Angels came into Monday night’s game against Atlanta with a 26-27 record and 10 games behind the first-place Houston Astros in the AL West.
