Trump says U.S. is 'very close' to securing trade deal with China

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Donald Trump on Thursday said on the United States was "very close" to nailing down a trade deal with China, just days before new U.S. tariffs on Chinese imports were due to be imposed.

"Getting VERY close to a BIG DEAL with China," Trump said on Twitter. "They want it, and so do we."

Trump was expected to meet with his top trade advisers on Thursday to discuss the Dec. 15 tariffs deadline, sources have told Reuters.

When I saw the stocks flying I thought a deal was signed and hands shaken on an official ceremony. Instead, Trump tweeted for bargain. For the n-th time. Pity I missed selling the rumor.

He's been very close for several months now - until we know the detail, the market really shouldn't be reacting - more to the point, if the tariffs are cancelled or at least stalled indefinitely, then it will show us that the Emperor is wearing no clothes. Very true. Trump is a showman and an entertainer. His job is to appeal to emotion and distract from the truth. With more than 5 decades of experience as a relentless self promoter, all this bending of the truth is old hat to him.
